Oakley release limited edition Tour de France Radar Pace

These limited edition versions of the high-tech shades have the Tour de France logo etched on the lens, and even a coating inspired by the French mountains

If you want to own some of the most hi-tech shades on the market and pay homeage to Le Tour (and happen to have £400 burning a hole in your pocket) then the limited edition Tour de France Radar Pace from Oakley could be for you.

Oakley partner with Intel to develop Radar Pace smart eyewear

Released to "celebrate the history and legacy of the iconic competition", they have the voice-activated coaching system and app connectivity of the standard Radar Pace, but with bespoke Tour-themed features including an iridium lens designed to look like a map, a Tour logo etched on the side and a yellow Tour de France carry pouch/cleaning cloth.

The spec list on the Radar Pace is impressive, using Intel technology to connect plenty of real-time data including power output, HR, cadence and speed. You can also use the touch pad on the temples to control functions such as volume, music and calls from a paired phone. They're water resistant up to IPX5 (totally shower-proof) and lenses are interchangeable, plus you also get spares and accessories included for your 400 notes such as a hard case, 2 ear booms, a clear lens for low light and a micro USB cable for charging.

Do you need them... does anyone need them? Most likely not, but for the cyclist and Tour fanatic/lottery winner who has everything they're a pretty mean pair of shades...

Jack has been writing about cycling and multisport for over a decade, arriving at road.cc via 220 Triathlon Magazine in 2017. He worked across all areas of the website including tech, news and video, and also contributed to eBikeTips before being named Editor of road.cc in 2021 (much to his surprise). Jack has been hooked on cycling since his student days, and currently has a Trek 1.2 for winter riding, a beloved Bickerton folding bike for getting around town and an extra beloved custom Ridley Helium SLX for fantasising about going fast in his stable. Jack has never won a bike race, but does have a master's degree in print journalism and two Guinness World Records for pogo sticking (it's a long story).

Oakley reminds me of this guy I used to see riding the Tour de France. He would wear oakleys and a blue jersey and harrass the leaders, racing ahead of them on the climbs. I don't know who he was and his name isn't recorded on the results; I think they just let some amateur guy join in because they felt sorry for him or something.
