Commuter diaries - share the path

Avatar

Yesterday when I was out on a 30 mile training ride, a youth on a bmx rode across on coming taffic and skidded in front of me! I slammed on the anchors and pulled an endo on my Allez Elite. What an idiot! Some of these younsters give cyclists a bad name; the number I see around town without lights at night is amazing and you can bet your life if there ever an accident, god forbid, then the motorist would be the one to blame. If I had been going any faster I would have ploughed straight into him, on the open road! It really left me shocked.

Share the path, share the road, but should we with irresponsible cyclists who do nothing but damage our powerful movement?

Last winter, I saw two lads on BMXes doing wheelies whilst going the wrong way up the bus lane on Oxford Road (Manchester, the busiest bus route in Europe). It was dark, they had no lights too.

The take home message for me is to expect everyone to do something stupid (pedestrians, cyclists, motorists) and adjust my riding accordingly.

Same issues here in Bristol, idiots on singlespeeds diving between traffic through red lights barely missing on coming traffic. On the news last night people (cycling campaign groups) were saying hopw cycling here is not being supported the way it should be but as a cyclist I think anyone who rides a bike has a responsibility not to be an idiot.
