The Wiggle Hell of Hexham Sportive is one 'Hell' of a challenge! In its second year this sportive starts from the convenient Hexham Racecourse which boasts fantastic views over the Tyne Valley. From here the route heads southwest into the North Pennines, which is filled with quality climbs, breath-taking views and extremely quiet roads.
The route takes you through Allendale town and then climbs to Coalclengh, it passes disused mines and out of season ski lifts giving a sense of remoteness and escapism. At this point the route splits and the Epic route heads South and gets very hilly passing over 'Chapel Fell' which offers a long demanding climb. An awesome decent awaits before the challenge of 'White Hill', passing Bollinghope Common. From the top there are awe inspiring unrivalled views!
The final climb of 'Long Hill' (there is a clue to the type of climb in the name) has to be concurred before the route re-joins the standard route and heads North towards Derwent Resevoir. A few climbs and endless stunning views of Hexham Common and the Tyne Valley await before riders will arrive back at Hexham Racecourse where they will receive a well-deserved medal! Post event refreshments and massages will also be waiting.
There are 3 route to choose from, 99 miles, 86miles, 52 miles. Due to the hilly nature of this outstanding cycling area, all routes will offer tough challenges for seasoned cyclists. The Epic route has over 3500 meters of climbing!
