*sigh* replacement BB30A chainsets for a Cannondale

So... I have no reason to want to replace my stock FSA Gossamer, other than I saw some very tasty BB30 FSA K-Lights in the ChainReaction sale.

Although I wasn't seriously considering buying them, I did research whether I could fit them to my 5mm wider BB30A frame.

As there don't appear to be any spacers on an FSA BB30 crankset I figured no, as there would be nowhere for the extra 5mm of BB Shell to go.

It got me wondering, how do you source a new chainset for a BB30A Cannondale? They must exist as I doubt top of the range Synapses come with FSA Gossamer cranks...

Thanks

I* just used a Praxis converter in my Cannondale BB30 and have fitted a Campagnolo Record chainset to it. Still in the process of finishing off the build (partly due to a broken elbow sustained the other week during my commute) but the cranks certainly seem to spin fine!

* I should say that my LBS did this for me as my technical skills are negligible and fitting the converter probably would have resulted in my flat burning down.

Various converters pass through here - saying that there only seems to be a single model available today - the FSA reducer.

Hi Hedgey,

I received the following from Cycle Sports Group, who I believe are the UK Cannondale Distributors:

"Currently we have only tested the FSA BB386 for 100% compatibility."

I haven't taken it any further however, it was good enough to know that there is at least one upgrade path, if the numerous suggestions above didn't work.

For the benefit of anyone searching for more info regarding BB30A compatible cranksets, Rotor's 30mm spindle cranksets will fit.

I swapped the FSA Gossamer on my Synapse for a Rotor 3D+ crankset,  purely for asthetics - I know there's no real gain 1

Bought a 5.5mm spacer from Velotech to use on the non-drive side with the 1mm and wavey washer that came off the Gossamer.  Then one of the included 11mm spacers on the drive side.

Interestingly, the Gossamer crankset I took off is clearly labelled as a BB30 Crankset and not BB386...

Hi Ian,
I just bought a synapse DI2 disk and want to replace the 50/34 chain rings.
Did you get anywhere with enough confidence to make a purchase regarding your queries on what to replace the crankset with ?

thanks-A

HI, if you have the one piece SpideRing, you can replace with other ratio SpideRings or you can fit a spider on the Si cranks to fit other chainrings. You don't need to change your whole chainset. Hope this helps.

These odd size bike frames are a pain when wanting to upgrade. I am so glad my bike had shimano everything, peace of mind 1

I had the same issue. You can remove the built-in Preload ring device on the SRAM Cranksets, which give you an additional 5mm to make up for the 5mm wider bottom bracket shell width on the non-drive side. They are pressed onto the spindle, but can be removed by hand with a bit of effort. A 30mm wave washer can then be used between the crank arm and the bearing for preload, with 30mm shims added to get fine preload adjustment. Saved me from having to buy another crankset.

There is one option out there in the market! Kogel Bearings makes a specific BB30A-24 conversion bottom bracket, no need for adapters!! Have a look: www.kogel.cc

cheers!

E-mail FSA and check. I did read somewhere on the Cannondale website that all BB30 cranks will fit BB30A but I also agree with you that there doesn't seem much of a gap to take up the 5mm extra width, so I wouldn't trust that without checking with FSA first

I wouldn't change the cranks unless you need to, but if you ever do, then Wheels Manufacturing make an adapter that will allow Shimano and SRAM cranks to fit both BB30a and BB30: http://wheelsmfg.com/products/bottom-brackets/cannondale-bb30a/bb30a-ada...

I've just used these to convert my BB30 to a 24mm spindle & Shimano Ultegra chainset.

Very easy to fit & no complaints so far 16

Sorry my bad, I have had the full briefing on Praxis bottom brackets...seems like it went in one ear and out of the other.

Just a follow up, I heard back from Cannondale's UK importers Cycling Sports Group.

"Thank you for contacting us.

Currently we have only tested the FSA BB386 for 100% compatibility."

From what I can see the BB386 basically has a longer spindle with spacers that can be removed if you have a 73mm wide BB30A shell.

Good to know there are cranks/bottom brackets out there, shame there's none in the CRC clearout that are the right length/chainring size for me though, will just have to consider it money saved!

Have you tried Wheels Manufacturing or Rotor for a compatible BB? They both do a range of BBs to fit BB30 frames (so may do a BB30a compatible BB as well) that have bearings to fit 30mm or 24mm axles (i.e. no spacers, additional reducers etc. plus the centre tubes are threaded for a secure fit). Might be a case of contacting them to see if they can help.

Thanks guys, Praxis are quite explicit that their convertors don't work with BB30A, I guess because the extra 5mm shell width messes with the expanding collet system that Praxis use (i.e. it wouldn't expand enough). Plus the crank axles would still require an extra 5mm of length I guess.

Will look at SRAM cranks, maybe they have 5mm worth of spacers that would allow the wider bottom bracket.

Not a matter of urgency, I guess I'll just have to forego the 58% saving on a nice Carbon crankset that I don't actually need...

Praxis Conversion Bottom Bracket lets you fit any standard chainset, including their own Turn sets.

Otherwise pony up for a Cannondale Si.

Sram Force 22 BB30 will fit. Maybe other Sram chainsets too.
