It was only £20 love, honest

Really interested to know what new and devious ways I can convince my wife cycling is a cheap hobby.

Obviously I already have the Black-ops bank account for major purchases; wheels, frames and groupsets, then the excuses like 'oh that, no that's the old Garmin/bibs/glasses' and of course the tried and tested 'no, those are the wheels from that old bike - unfortunately they are not compatible with this bike so I'm going to get them rebuilt' lines.

With the combined road.cc experiences spanning thousands of years I'd love to hear how you manage to pull the wool over your wife/husband/partner's eyes.

Don't worry you can always set up a new account if you are worried about this getting back.

I do know that my next bike will need to be matched by a diamond ring.

Best thing to do? Marry a woman who is also into cycling. If not, get her into cycling. Then, all future purchases can come out of the joint account. Its saved me thousands!

You are so right, but try as I might she won't go for it. For some reason she thinks working out in a gym is just as good as having the wind/rain/hail in your face, pitting your wits against HGV drivers and loose surfaces and the incredible feeling of achievement when you top out on one of the beautiful Yorkshire Wolds climbs around where we live.

A friend of mine had a red bike and wanted a new frame so bought a new frame also in red in the hope that his wife would not notice. It wasn't the same shade of red but he doubted his wife paid that much attention to what was in the garage anyway. Naturally the first time the newly framed bike was rolled out to no fanfare at all his wife said "what's that? I've never seen that one before"

"Bollocks" I'm speculating is what he must have thought at the time that happened.

Schoolboy error - there's a reason black bikes and kit are referred to as 'stealth'. I learned that one a long time ago.

My wife does that too. She can spot different colours at a thousand paces, and I can slip nothing past her.

I think the dilemma could be summarised by this t-shirt

I find the most expensive thing the travel/accommodation/entry fees. Actual hardware purchases pale into nothingness compare to the other costs involved in the sport. If she's worried about me buying a new frame or kit she's barking up the wrong tree.

Easy... my other half is in to cycling too. So i don't need to make excuses for my purchases at all. In fact the main problem for me is that she likes the things i buy and then goes out and buys a version of it. This will be the reason we have 9 wheelsets for 4 bikes!

I think this post needs to be sticky to the top of the forum.
