Thanks guys, going to try and get an Axiom Streamliner Road, which mounts using the rear wheel spindle and caliper bolt:

With a handlebar bag of some sort. Those arkel ones are expensive, I guess it gives me something else to watch ebay for though.
You could also use a large saddle bag and handlebar bag.
You can get racks which use a special quick release skewer and brake bosses or clamps to mount to the frame at the top. Look at Tubus or Old Man Mountain.
these are good, not cheap though:

seatpost mounted racks are okay up to about 8kg in my experience, and *much* better with a topbox than panniers. I've got one of those topeak bikamper tents that uses your front wheel and your forks as the tent structure. only big enough for one, but packs down tiny and keeps your bike fairly safe too. you can strap it to your 'bars or frame. great for light touring.
seen this? http://road.cc/content/review/15375-topeak-mtx-trunk-dry-bag
good mid-size top bag and topeak do a seatpost rack that'll work with it too.
