Stock disc wheel upgrade (caad12): Fulcrum, Pro Lite.. Hunt?!
Hey guys
I've started thinking about upgrading the very heavy oem wheels on my caad12 105 disc - maddux rd 2.0 - which aren't even on the manufacturers site! I can't find a weight but they are heavy.
Anyway, my budget is ever tight, and was looking at fulcrum 5 lg which are £217-239 a pair... But are they too cheap / not that much of an upgrade?
I saw recommendations for Hunt wheels on another post, which look ace (including these https://www.huntbikewheels.com/collections/wheels/products/mason-x-hunt-...) but at £369 really out of my budget... But must be a big weight difference and save me upgrading for a long time? And damn they look nicer than the garish fulcrum, novatec (jetfly) and pro lite revo i've seen online too.
A bit of info - I'm riding (very) rough and sandy roads in thailand, and local bike shop recommend aluminium. Any thoughts? I looked at higher spec caad12 disc but the mavics in those aren't rated well

The pawls are internal, yes.
MarkOne, mainly the value, the availability of proper UK support and the fact that they're very plain and understated. I can't stand gaudy wheels.
Hm.. I'm the same with the gaudiness.. Saw the fulcrums have decals, so I could take them off... But the Hunts are more aero... Tempted.. But money money!
The freehub on the cosines is no louder or quieter than any other wheel. It'll be the same on the Hunts. It's a non-issue.
Not always, the last mountain bike I bought has a Hope rear wheel. It was so loud it was embarrssing. I ended up selling it on and having a wheel built on an XT hub to match the front one.
I have Hunts on both bikes. The freehubs aren't noisy but you can quieten them down more by using a very thick oil on the pawls. I lubed mine with Morgan Blue Synlube and they're really quiet now.
What made you choose them over other wheels?
Are pawls internal? Wouldn't want sand sticking to the grease
+ 1 for the cosine disc wheels from wiggle. I've got 2 pairs and have done 5k on my commuter with no issues, and also got them on a CX bike, again no issues.
I've been thinking the same thing.. Can't really justify spending another £250 if they use the same hubs! Hunt said you could pack more grease in the hubs to reduce the click?
I had the same Maddux wheels as you on my alloy framed Synapse disc. Swapped them for Hunt 4-Seasons. That was two years ago. When I upgraded to a carbon synapse six months later I replaced the stock Mavic Aksiums with the Hunts off my old bike as soon as I got it home.
I have been VERY happy with the Hunt wheels. Look good, have proven very reliable and ride so much better than the original stock wheels. Saved aroung 400g as well. The freehub is not as loud as some hubs like hope and DT, but is louder than Shimano. The other big advantage is the ability to run tubelss tyres. I haven't had a single puncture now in two years of riding and the comfort, rolling resistance and grip are improved as well.
My wheels have even seen service on my CX bike and my hardtail MTB for some CX and beach racing too, and I have used them on a few road rides that included some gravel sections. Never missed a beat.
Nice, it seems they are a bit of a rarity.. Which also draws me to them. No spoke or bearing issues?
I've got a Cannondale Synapse Adventure and upgraded the wheels to some cosine ones from Wiggle. £180.

Similar to the hunts, same hubs. They're much lighter, spin better and are far stiffer than the wheels they replaced. I couldn't fault them.
There are some great reviews for those.. And a couple not so good, including lack of stiffness! Same hubs? Some said they are noisy...but.. Could be a rethink!

DT Swiss R 24 Spline Disc wheels are good wheels that can often be found at a really good price. £200-250 for the pair, bomb proof, good width rim so fine for wider tyres, very nice hubs. About 1800g for the set. https://www.dtswiss.com/Wheels/Road-Wheels/R-24-Spline-db

Hunt wheels are really well reviewed and the service they Hunt can provide is really good, so difficult to go wrong if you choose to go down that route. The hubs on them aren't quite as nice as the DT Swiss ones but they are still very good

Do you know how they differ? Do either make the loud freewheel clicking?

I've got the DTSwiss R23 on my bike atm, the freewheel is fairly loud.
Ok thanks.. Not sure about a loud one - I like to be past the wild dogs before they hear me coming!
If that's a worry, you can get devices (ultrasonic, etc.) to scare off aggressive dogs.

Or carry a Jif lemon sqeezy bottle...dogs do not like a little squirt of Jif Lemon...
Actually I've had few issues here.. Walking is worse.. Some carry stun guns to scare them with the noise!
Fulcrum 5s are good stiff wheels, if you like stiff you'll like them.
not sure what I like, to be honest, as this is my first road bike!
