Velo South

Do think it is a bit cheeky that there are not any prices on the Velo South website  and when you click through the cost of entry avoiding having to go down the day before ie they post you the info rather than having to register in person is £137.

I did the Velo Birmingham last year. It was fun, particularly as it was my first time on closed roads. What really made it was the weather (always a bit of a risk in mid-September) and the crowds lining the side of the roads in every village you went through. If it had chucked down with rain all day I think it would have been a very different experience.

Yes, it was overpriced. Yes, the organisation was shit. Yes, it was a pain in the ass going to Brum the day before even for someone who lives close by. Still a fun day in the saddle though.

I'm not sure I'm getting all the fuss about these velo Birmingham and velo South rides..

They have extraordinary pricing!

The UK has silly pricing for most organised rides, but this takes the Michael. CSM Ltd is a totally commercial entity, not for charity, chaired by Seb Coe. They rode roughshod over residents around Brum last year and had to move the route twice..  is all the fuss becuase it's closed roads? There are other closed road rides in the UK. The routes themselves don't appear to be anything particuarly amazing..

Why are the national cycling press and seemingly every third person I speak to going ape over this? What am I missing?

It's organised by the same people that did Velo Birmingham last year.  That filled up quick and I think this will too.

Yeah, I do... I won't be riding this race for just that reason. I registered, paid, *then* found out either I need to pay more or come in on the Saturday to register as they won't be allowing any registrations on the day.

Bollocks. I'm not paying even more for an already expensive ride just to be posted a pack so I don't have to pay for a hotel as well.

If you want to race then enter a race but please don't enter a sportive thinking it's the same thing.

I think this event is a big swing & a miss.  Loads of potential for it to be awesome but £79, plus a booking fee, plus having to go to Goodwood the day before to pick up your number is a bit silly.  There's even a transaction fee if you buy the merchandise from them!

Oh, but if you pay £50 more then they'll post your number to save the trip!  I know Royal Mail costs are steadily rising but that takes the fucking piss.
