New Canyon frameset or something else?

hi, looking for some advice.

I’m going to build a new bike with Di2 and disc brakes.

Was going to use a Canyon frame but they’re sold out - well the Ultimate CF SL is sold out, the SLX is still available. I’m just not sure the SLX represents good value as its £1000 more for 100g lighter. It’s also going to be stiffer but I can’t see any other differences.

I’ve also seen a Cannondale SuperSix Evo Hi mod carbon frame for £2k at Sigma sports.

Canyon say they won’t have any new Ultimate CF SL frames until 2019 models are released so do I;

a) wait until end of summer and get the CF SL

b) blow the budget and get the CF SLX

c) get the Cannondale

d) find another Di2 disc carbon frameset under £2k

Any advice or other options welcome!

I have an Ultimate CF SLX Disc, I've ridden an Ultimate CF SL, couldn't tell the difference at all!

The only real difference I do notice is I much prefer the Gran Tourismo Blue on the CF SLX as opposed to the Stage Race Blue of the Ultimate CF SL.

Thanks Scoob. I’m only looking for the frameset.

Going for ultra cheap wheels now then something a bit more special in next year’s cycle to work scheme.

If your comparing the ultegra Di2 disc brake packages from SL and SLX ranges, then the SL bike's overall package is around half a kg lighter. Those mavic cosmic pro's have a chunky weight penalty. Something to think about.

For what its worth, i bought the Ultegra mechanical SLX disc version last year and its a lovely ride, but haven't tried the SL version so can't compare.

I’m a sucker for the Gran Turismo blue too!

I found this grouptest quite helpful. Canyon SLX winner for vfm although not overall. Rose X Lite didn’t review too well with heavier riders.

Cheers for the help guys.

DrJDog, I’d forgotten about the race licence discount. I might be getting it in Europe though so not sure it would be applicable. Depends how the exchange rate swings as to what is the bigger discount.

I think it’s £250 off but licence costs £88? There’s about a £100 saving by buying in euros just now.

bike.owner, those frames sound good and look great. I couldn’t find a price online but i’m not keen on raising the budget again, I’m guessing they’re around or over the £3k mark?

sergius, a bit of a cheeky question but if you rode the SL and didn’t really notice a difference why did you go for the SLX? Or did you already have the SLX before trying the SL?

(I’m looking for ways I could justify the bigger ticket purchase!)

Thanks again for all the advice.

The frame colours... (and a balancing act between how much I wanted to spend - I don't need a 6k bike).  Canyon offer limited, and different, colour frames for each model.

I've a Canyon Ultimate CF SLX, lovely bike.  I tried out a CF SL at the Canyon Experience day and couldn't really tell you they felt different if I'm honest.

That’s great to know.

I really like Canyons, I have an older CF SL with 105s which I love. Just can’t decide whether to wait 5 months and save the money...

Does the Rose review as well as the Canyon?

ps. Congrats on the SLX, I’m jealous!! 3

I've an older Rose Xeon which I use for longer days in the saddle - it's a different machine to my Ultimate.  The new xlite for 2018 reviewed pretty well from what I saw - the main issue for me was the boring paint job and the fact that it's no cheaper than the Canyon - which is a world tour level frame.

If you do get a Canyon don't forget the race licence discount.

A Rose x-lite frame might be worth a look.
