My commuter (Veloce) used to drop the chain occasionally - but not since I fitted a Deda Dog Fang, so can recommend those if you have a round seat tube.
I also have no chain catcher on my best bike (Chorus) and never drop the chain.
They work, but there are limits - if your chain is inside the line of the small ring and you're standing on the pedals, then it's a big ask for it to force the chain back in place - it's only a bit of aluminium held at one end by a bolt. Put it down to experience - most of the time it will work, but not always
Pretty much my thoughts. As I said it was my fault it came off in the 1st place & the main reason I got it was to protect the frame.
Just curious as to what others experiences are with them.
Mine is a token chain catcher, I know there are others so not sure which style yours is.
Same. It's a simple piece and easy to fit. My advice is to fit the 'business end' of the chain catcher as close to the chain (when it's on the inner ring) as possible. Virtually touching. Any gap... and it just won't work.
Chain catcher should keep the chain on the small ring.
Interesting. Certainly wasn't my experience.
I'm no mechanic but can't see how I've installed it incorrectly. It's as close to the inner ring as it can be without touching it.
Is it high enough? (i.e. does it guide the chain onto the top of the ring's teeth, or force it into the side of the ring?)
Is it cheap and a bit too flexible?
It's a Canyon chaincatcher that I bought with the bike & is one of those that attaches to the bottle cage mounts so the chances of it being installed incorrectly are pretty much nil even with my lack of mechanical skills.
You can only attach it one way by the 2 holes at the top & then line it up with the small ring.
