It's a good article, and while not common, I've seen enough tiny dicked, angry muppets throwing abuse at women who were doing nothing wrong to know that yes, what she says in the article actually happens.

It defies belief but yes, this is the world we live in.

How about this . A man pisses off a driver ,if the driver looks at the man and thinks the man can take care of himself then he won’t say a thing . If the man is a skinny road cyclist who weighs seven stone the  driver will shout and give abuse , just like he would a woman ,because he knows when it comes to fisticuffs he’s going to win . It’s that fucking simple .

It’s the actions of cowards . Simple as that .

Yay.. Also a lot of times the car can out pace a push bike hence distraction blame from doing no wrong might shine from a low body temperature driver.
I was hundreds of metres, many many seconds, yet because cyclists are less often seen where I was, I think it's more of a cold fright of a driver. Half of them are probably half asleep.
Ohh, what if I hit him? I'd be blamed..
Women might be getting different but similar.. Maybe she's poor and would like a man with a car? In it to win it, can always drive off if not interested. Half way through a half thought through dream a half wit might awake from a half asleep mindset and defend himself like a coward by yelling at her.

I'm half asleep, I think this planet is crazier than it should be.. Loving the alloys

I agree. Bullies weigh up situations very carefully and pick their "battles" accordingly.

when we trundle out with my 85 year old mum in her electric wheelchair, we get immense courtesy from drivers when we cross the road.  In this case it's not fisticuffs, but that you would not win the argument if named (and shamed) on social media, or if it went to court if you knocked over the wheelchair lady. (She's a great-grandma, an amputee and a widow too, for all you tabloid headline writers.)

Isn't there something in some people's "code of ethics" warped though this is, that it's fine to take on an equal (whatever that is) but not a female, or someone elderly?

I'm a white male. I've been yelled at by a driver instructor and had some sort of hand gesture from a lovely looking female driver the last two days.
I figured it because I dropped it back a few cogs and launched it in front of the next multiple lane wave of traffic on the express way. Must have looked good at it. 1
Women look even better. Congratulations. I love the wet of sweat too

Does that not contradict the research into close passing from a few years back?

(I only skimmed the article, this is the internet so I never like to wade into a discussion with all the information)

I'm sceptical of the results in that article as his results are more to do with a bloke in a wig than an actual woman cyclist.

I came across this interesting cycling 'hack' the other day: https://qz.com/1620913/the-best-cycling-hack-is-a-pool-noodle/

Nice. I wonder how difficult it'd be to duct tape a chisel to the end of the pool noodle? Just asking, for a friend   3

Your friend may have better luck taking a hammer to some spark plugs and then gluing the ceramic shards (aka ninja rocks) onto the end. Lighter and more likely to break a window.

I would mention aggressive female drivers of large 4x4s but I dare not as a middle aged man for risk of being accused of gender stereotyping.

It seems to be written from her experience and those with whom she has talked to.

We may get abuse, talking as a middle aged male cyclist, but we can never hope to understand the levels of abuse that many women are subjected to in life, let alone whilst riding a bike.

That's not a good article at all... just a feminist rant based on a 2015 study which it takes at face value and doesn't even try to critique.

In what way was it a "feminist rant"?  I thought it made some good points.

(Disclaimer: I'm a cis white male).

You're a STRAIGHT WHITE MALE?

Your opinion is automatically racist and invalid. Check your privilege and pay reparations.

Hmm

And perhaps you need to go find yourself the next Jordan Peterson book-signing, so you can be back among friends.

(PS - you do know that "cis" doesn't actually mean "straight"?  It means someone who self-identifies with the same gender as their body appearance, which is itself the same gender with which they were born).

He's a Cyclist and therefore is a hidden minority. We are all cyclists here.

Why a "feminist" rant? It's her point of view based on her own experience, her discussions with other female and male cyclists, and a reference to a published article.

Regardless of the basis for it, an article implying something negative about men is a "feminist rant". In that vein, I'd characterise your opinion as mysoginistic bullshit.

You seem hypersensitive about this topic.  Bit snowflakey, even.  If you think that's a "feminist rant" you haven't known many feminist ranters.

Article seemed perfectly reasonable to me.  I constantly hear from women I know about the aggro they get in the street just as pedestrians.  And all cyclists get aggression from motons.  So it's not at all implausible the two issues could interact.  The article is one person's experience of that interaction.  That it has a link to an actual study on the topic is just a bonus.
