are people still riding now its freezing?

I've been keeping to the main roads and out of the gutter and its been fine so far on the commute. Roundabouts are a touch dicey due to the amount of salt and diesel on them though.

I'm with Fish_n_Chips - steering well clear of the roads until it's 6+ degrees. I haven't been out for two weeks now. I've been going to the gym to keep some semblance of fitness going but there's no substitute for road miles really is there?

3 of us set out on a ~24 hour trip this weekend in the Derby - Ashbourne area. -2 this morning and the snow was quite hard work on the Tissington trail. Enjoyed it though. 4 season bags were useful!

The black ice has me worried on the road bike so I'm avoiding road riding till it's 6C or above
As too many crashed badly.

I do remember riding in it as a teen to college with my mtb and riding over snow and ice at 6mph was awesome! Now I just want a turbo trainer!

I am considering getting the road bike out tomorrow at some point, but it looks unlikely.

Snowed again here last night (wasn't forecast) most of the roads were clear when I rode in, so on the way home though decided to chance Greenaway Lane which is on my usual route home. It's my favourite bit of the ride cos it starts with a nice sharp hill which opens out on to a false flat and then some proper flat. In the winter it's a trap for the unwary or the foolhardy like, er, me cos both ends are usually clear and give no hint of what's waiting for you in the middle.

Bottom of the hill is on the edge of the centre of Bath and it goes up pretty steeply but as soon as its got any height it nearly always seems to freeze up, even though it's a rat run, but the fun really starts when it climbs up and around in to Greenaway Lane itself. This road seems to have its own micro climate. Tonight it was a quarter of a mile of steeply cambered sheet ice, after a couple of hundred metres I got off - you could hardly stand up on it, although that didn't stop a couple of numpties blatting past at well over the speed limit - lucky neither had to touch the brakes, lucky I'd gotten off.

Last year the council shut the road because of the ice, and considering that the frozen section includes the entrance to a school it's unbelievable that they hadn't either gritted it or shut it this time around… although about 20 minutes later I was nearly run off the road by a speeding gritter lorry so maybe they have now.

Would love to ride except the 45cm deep snow up to the end of our road is slowing me down a bit.

I did see a couple of commuters out on their bikes today heading south out of Sheffield though. Chapeau to them.

Quite mild today in Lancashire, main roads were pretty clear the odd section with ice in the gutters. Rode out to Forton avoiding the lanes which were dicey,with no problems. Got a train going at 20-22mph was fun.
The hills looked lovely dusted in snow.

We will ride through the Winter but will be on main roads/bus routes till the ice passes.

Rode from Bishop Sutton to Filton on Monday. Not too bad and very little ice. :o)

No snow in Maidenhead but freezing cold, did 32 miles this afternoon. That's enough in this weather.

funny i used to love the snow before i started cycling, now i hate the stuff getting in the way of my commuting and weekend cycling...

I cycled from Ghent to Bruges at the weekend. Very cold but really enjoyed it.

I'm currently riding an electric Ute, which i can heartily recommend as a winter bike. nice and long and low, huge tyres and a motor so you can wear you thickest jumper and still ride up the hill without getting sweaty

still riding to work (bristol to yate) on my genesis flyer. Really nice actually, the crisp air feels good once Im warmed up.

I'm still riding in Bath the roads are dry here bit of ice in the gutters and on the sides of some untreated roads left over from the snow at the weekend, but actually it's not too bad - certainly not having any problems with over-heating that's for sure
