Road Cycling Photography

I'm a bit of an amateur photographer and I want to get into more sports photography, specifically road and track cycling which I'm a big fan of. Up to now I've only really been doing live music photography, gigs and festivals and that kind of thing, but I did go to Beverley last year for the East Yorkshire Classic and have done the odd bit of motorsport too. In music photography access is generally provided through publications so what I want to know is do you guys have any suggestions on websites I could contact to provide some photos for so that I can apply for media access and get into the areas that normal spectators can't. Thanks Dan www.danielheaton.com

Those Beverley pics are OK, getting more like that wouldn't hurt. If you've had some good shots of pro riders e.g. Rapha, Motorpoint etc why not email the team to ask if you can take some around the next event you're attending? They will want shots featuring their own riders prominently - either winning or with logos visible etc etc.

You can often get close at Tour Series and other events without a pass as the sport is very accessible, the more good images from which to cull a portfolio the better, and it helps 'get your eye in'. Try events run by clubs (crits, circuit races, MTB etc) and approach them directly, offer to let them use your images in return for access. Good luck, keep at it.

True, I did actually email you guys last year but never heard back 2 If you're interested in running more stuff on road/track events then I'd be more than happy to provide the photos!

Thanks, I had considered contacting the teams and once I've covered a couple more events I might do just that. The better events for photos seem to be the circuit races and, like you said, the tour series, so I'll probably try and get out to more of those this year. The only problem with Beverley last year was being cramped in the crowd and trying to get to the places I wanted to be, I was hoping that with someone to run the pictures I might be able to apply for better access this time round but I'll have to see how I get on I guess.
