Bontrager stock wheel info

Hi All

I have a Trek Emonda SL5 Disc and it came stock with a wheelset that simply states "Bontrager TLR" - No model number anywhere to be found and nothing on Trek's website either.

Anyone know what sort of weight these stock wheels are likely to be? I don't have accurate enough scales to work out - All I can say is that they are 26mm deep and 24 spoke.

Looking at either a DT Swiss ER1800 (1750g) or Alex CDX4 (1580g) - Both have a rider weight limit a good 15kg higher me+bike so I am good there. On paper the CDX4 are a good deal lighter than the DT Swiss but the DT Swiss are a bit more aero and have the ratchet freehub , I also think the DT Swiss look better but that's a side point.

Ultimately if the stock wheels are 1900/2000g which in my experience is typical stock wheel weight then i think it will be worth the spend otherwise might just leave it.

Anyone with info on the stock Bontrager TLR wheels?

So dug out the bike tools and stripped the wheels down to find out - Curiousity got the better of me. Took off the rotor / cassette and thru axles (so only the rim tape left in place).

Take a guess at what these stock wheels were (bear in mind the bike cost me £2k)..... Nope you were wrong - 2271g!!!!!

Frigging 2.3kg , my stock wheels on my £500 Merlin weigh less than that and they are disc wheels and have 32 spokes.

Anway ended up ordering some Fulcrum Racing 4 DB disc wheels as they were on offer and are 1690g so all in 500g lighter than stock.

So now anyone buying a Trek with 'unknown' TLR wheels be warned they are friggin heavy.

The Trek website says the 2020 model Emonda SL5 Disc is using the Bontrager Affinity Disc rims on Bontrager hubs (looks like the 2019 also used Affinity rims)

Had a couple of sets of older Bontrager Race TLR wheels and they're alright IME, especially the hubs - nice tight rims for tubeless, sometimes real tight for any tyre, with the TLR rim strip in.

Are these the jobbies?

If so then they look alright to me and I don't think either of the wheels you have mentioned would provide a significant improvement.

In terms of an upgrade, I'd look for some deeper rims, aero benefits only really kick in at 40-45mm rim depth which means carbon wheels although I appreciate that your budget may not stretch this far.
