Carmaggedon in Bournemouth played out live...

Live blog:

https://www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/news/18635144.heatwave-bournemouth-bea...

Highlights include:

"we've been told that Avon Run Road is very busy with parked cars" (strange, because there's no daytime parking allowed there in the summer months...)

(This just in from one of CyclingMikey's admirers, "just got [deleted] parking ticket born mouth police, why you ruini hard workin family day out my daughter sc4eamimg")

"Sandbanks is already looking very busy with standstill traffic starting from Evening Hill." - Evening Hill, that neoprene vs Lycra battleground, so no doubt that will all be cyclists' fault - who'd want to deliver a fridge, be an estate agent or disabled driver amid that lot, eh?

and from the bus company - "Traffic congestion is starting to build up more around the Christchurch area and some services on routes 1, 1a, 1b and 33 may be delayed up to 10-15 minutes" - wheeeee, the car killing off all alternatives!

same time tomorrow and Sunday, folks!

I went to the south coast at the weekend to drop off my daughter with grandparents for a week, the roads were busy the whole way (from the midlands) there and back, but off the M3 through the new forest was just nuts.

It is of course to be expected, good weather, no abroad holidays, everyone has been holed up, the whole country is now heading to a UK coastline.

Go down their from time to time to visit friends; the whole place is a temple to the motor car.  Their neighbours make me laugh; there were 7 cars on the driveway last time I was there.  Every family member has at least one + extras.  It's the driveways with 'showroom condition' Land Rover Defenders parked in them that gets me.  They all cane around the roads as well; perhaps not on this day though!

Probably a couple of cyclists riding two abreast ten miles up the queue holding them all back.

i would have gone down there today if i wasnt stuck in a truck for 10 hours straight boiling my nuts off. The echo are all over it, as though its something new. They forgot my video carmagedon from a couple of years back. Showing how a bicycle can get you to the beach in two minutes, but cars were lining up from two miles away just to try and get a space- that was obviously going to be filled already. Theyre desperate for news and traffic just seems to get people interested. Anything to do with roads or traffic leads to an argument about cycle lanes or bicyclists on the comments section. Its really quite hilarious to watch them as they pop up, all arguing with eachother. I think i'm going to cycle all night, then in the morning i'll take the kawasaki down there, have a good time filtering it and wondering why on earth everyone is still driving there, when i told them [GET A PARK AND RIDE SYSTEM]. Why does nobody listen?

Shock news : local media outlet "tries to get people interested in content". Local journalism is dying on is feet.  People do grumble about the "Dear Sir, isn't the traffic terrible, it's must all be cyclists' fault" letters, but if it sells, then it must count for something.  Cycling on the prom seems to have settled down now - times like this help put that issue into perspective.
I wonder if one could lay on a seasonal park & ride big enough to handle that lot? Wouldn't everyone complain that disabled drivers' interests would be compromised? You'd need some kind of open-sided tourist tram type of arrangement at the moment. I have seen talk of road blocks, which for Bournemouth, bounded on two sides by river and with finite crossing-points, could be done, if you'd a mind to.
I guess we'll all be loading-up the car, ready for round 2 today.
