A DIY idea: Is it clever or stupid?

I have two pairs of shoes for offroad; Fizik Artica X5 for winter and Fizik Vento X3 for summer. The Articas are perfect for their job, but in summer I'm still getting really hot & sweaty on summer rides, so I'd like a little more ventilation.

Would it be crazy to drill a couple of holes in the toes of the Vento X3 to allow a bit more airflow through? They have a very sturdy toe cap (sturdier than I'll ever need, I'm not kicking rocks around) whilst further back on the upper there are lots of little perforations. I don't mind the risk of occasional mud ingress into the toe, as my off-road riding tends to be more gravel than mud and I hose the shoes out when necessary. Is there anything else that could go wrong?

On the basis that if they are too hot to wear you probably wont use them anyway I would start off drilling a few small holes and see what happens.  But remember, you can always add more holes or make the small ones larger but you cant go the other way so start cautiously and go for it.

Pros often used to take stanley knives to their shoes to help with fit.

Where are you riding that hot toes are an issue?

I'm overweight, and training hard on steep hills; hot everything is an issue. My better half has taken exception to the smell of the shoes in particular.

I think a bottle of Febreze and leaving the shoes outside to dry in the sun might help then ?

I thought the holes are to let air/moisture out? No sure how much airflow there will be with your foot in there.
