Does anyone have 3rd-party Cycling Insurance?

It seems that there's a lot of noise about cycling insurance at the moment. I've seen Laka are offering it for a £1 which seems like a good deal, with added incentives like perks from cycling brands. Has anyone taken this out? Would be interested to hear peoples experiences.

I get it through membership of Cycling UK. I've never claimed by 2 of my children have used it.

I have it through the LCC (London Cycling Campaign) I have never had to use it (apart from the incentives) but if I do I will have LCC supporting law firm to support me.

British Cycling were running a promotion on 6 months membership (which includes 3rd party liability insurance) at the start of lockdown, don't know if that's still available. I've been meaning to take it out for years and have finally done so mainly because during lockdown there were loads more cyclists and people exercising on foot. I'm also probably covered under my house insurance but wanted the cycling-specific expertise offered by the BC scheme.

I have insurance through Cycling UK membership. Previously I had British Cycling membership, but Cycling UK offers Household Membership which means I can insure my wife too. The magazine they send you is usually reasonably interesting.

6 months insurance for £1 is a very good deal, but how much do they charge when the 6 months is up?

As mentioned quite a lot of house insurance has it.  Bear in mind that means a successful claim against you means a ding on your house premiums which you probably dont want.  (You dont - believe me).

Purely on principle, if you don't have it, I'd recommend getting it.

If you can find an affordable "legal redress" option, go for that too. Nothing seems to make a motor insurance company withdraw their allegations against you - and pay out on your claim instead - faster than finding out that you can lawyer-up just as well as they can.

insurance against theft? "Third party" liability?  The point about legal redress is important and there may well be something in your house insurance about it.

When I neeeded its services to take action again the driver that knocked me off in 2007, I contacted the helpline that came with my house insurance - it turned out just to be a law firm that took cases on contingent liability i.e. "no win, no fee". Many policy-holders pay a premium for "family law protection" or similar and I'm not sure whether there is anything more  to it than that in reality.

"Now that cycle lanes are being placed on main thoroughfares within the city, cyclists are now sharing road space with all types of traffic; for example, heavy goods vehicles. (The Avenue is a good example)

This makes cycling ever more dangerous; the number of cyclists killed or injured by lorries is a national issue."

oh, yes Mr Nobbie, I'm sure you care very much about cyclists' we'll-being - when you're not tying yourself up in self-contradictions.

You get it with membership of british cycling and other similar orgs. Also many home insurance policies will include it if you want. Gives a bit of piece of mind tbh

Yep, check your home insurance first or any policy you might have with a union membership.

You won't get third party liability cover with BC Bronze membership.

The Laka deal looks very good value. However, I'd prefer to know that those working for me were cycling experts and would prefer to pay for BC or CUK membership (£4/month). My CUK membership fee is also helping them continue to campaign for cyclists' rights, as they have been doing ever since the CTC was formed.

Check whether you have household policy that might already cover it.
