Life on 'UK's most dangerous hill' where Huddersfield residents fear death

Locals fear the treacherous road could lead to fatalities if nothing is done

"cars are seen sliding sideways down the steep hill in icy conditions, cars have flipped over and even crashed into stone walls on some occasions, leaving them a total right off."

Council accused of 'giving up' on Bridgwater as plans to upgrade key roundabout are scaled back

The council said it was "taking a new approach" to the issue

The council subsequently announced in mid-January that it would be "taking a new approach", focussed on improved pedestrian crossings and other walking and cycling improvements rather than physically increasing the amount of space available to motorists.

Speaking from the roundabout site on Monday morning (February 5), Mr Redman said making any improvements to the capacity of the Cross Rifles roundabout was challenging due to the lack of open neighbouring land. He said: "The problem we have when it comes to our road infrastructure is the fact that we're limited by the close proximity of the houses and the businesses around us.

A barrier is to be installed at the top of a notorious street in Edinburgh after sat-nav errors repeatedly directed drivers down a set of steps.

If roads need to be updated to accommodate absurdly large cars, taxpayers will foot the bill.

(US, but still relevant)

https://slate.com/business/2024/02/car-safety-guardrails-bloat-electric-...

Quote:

It’s a nightmare situation on a highway: Your car hits a patch of ice and starts to skid. Unable to regain control, you panic as you veer toward the roadway’s edge.

In emergencies like this, guardrails provide a failsafe. As explained in a federal memo, a guardrail will “deflect a vehicle back to the roadway [or] slow the vehicle down to a complete stop.” Your car will probably be damaged, but guardrails can prevent something much worse.

But some modern vehicles can instead smash through these guardrails, new research demonstrates, sending their passengers hurtling toward a ditch, cliff, or whatever is on the other side. The problem is that thousands of miles of guardrails installed alongside American highways were designed decades ago, when vehicles were much lighter than the behemoths that increasingly dominate the U.S. car market. And cars are only getting heavier: Bulkier electrified versions of big cars are poised to arrive in the years ahead. The risk of huge vehicles tearing through guardrails is yet another reason to expect American car bloat to augur an expensive, and dangerous, roadway future.

Welcome to self-awarenessville, Kent

Sandwich BMW drifter opens Skidz Advanced Driving School at Manston Airport

“Drifting on the road can cost up to £100 a night. You’ve got the worry of the police taking your car as well as being seen as a public nuisance. The drifter community just want somewhere safe to do it without the stress. Cars can reach five-figure sums and people don’t want to see them impounded.”

The engineer, who has a business modifying drift cars, has previously been banned from the road three times and fined a total of £7,000.

https://www.kentonline.co.uk/thanet/news/i-ve-been-a-naughty-boy-but-now...

EDIT : I'm curious as to what the £100 a night actually goes on. Tyres, fines?

More crashes on Kent roads than any other county, new figures reveal

Among those now calling for Kent’s roads to be made safer is Keena Entwhistle, whose son Ethan died in a crash in October, two days before his 19th birthday.

The 46-year-old told KentOnline: “Neither I nor Ethan did anything wrong, but I have been left with a life sentence of this pain, and I do not want anyone else to ever feel this way.

“I think all roads in towns, and especially by schools, should be 20 miles an hour.

There will a zebra crossing making it easier to get to the place.
Apparently everyone comes by car and there is currently enough parking for 100 cars right at the front door

Get this a lot from the driver accounts: "it's about control...they want us out of our cars by 2030...vague reference to whatever conspiracy theory".

Tesla Norway fjord crash passengers saved by floating sauna users

It took me a while to parse that headline.

The first line of the text might have actually made a better headline, not so much in 'Newspaper Headline English':

BBC wrote:

The users of a sauna boat came to the rescue after a Tesla plunged into a fjord in Norway.

https://www.whatcar.com/news/the-most-stolen-cars-in-the-uk/n21162

Just the first article that came up on Google.  Of the three Range Rover variants listed (they're all the same to me) it comes to around 4,000 reported stolen.

The article doesn't separately list variants of the other cars and importantly there's only vague references to how numerous each one is.

https://www.click4gap.co.uk/blog/10-most-stolen-cars-in-the-uk-2023/

This one is better showing that Land Rovers are stolen at twice the rate Fiestas are.  How sad, never mind.

Why So Many Land Rover Range Rovers?

The Land Rover Range Rover witnessed a significant (47%) surge in theft reports to the police from 2021 to 2022, a trend that extended into the initial months of 2023.

Such an uptick in theft incidents has posed challenges for Range Rover owners, especially in the London region, when it comes to insuring their cars. Skyrocketing insurance premiums and a dwindling number of firms willing to offer coverage are among the primary concerns. The dilemma with Range Rovers isn’t so much about their security measures but the huge demand both domestically and internationally. Thieves are aware of the lucrative market for these vehicles, making them invest in the required technology to steal them.

Southampton Spring Road crash leaves Audi on top of BMW

As we all know, motor cars are like semi tamed wild animals, beyond the control of their drivers.  In this case, the Audi clearly should have been spayed…

The scene as it once was.  So, drivers you've been built a whole new road (The Clink, on the site of an old branch line) that along with everything else has put extra strain on this intersection,  now you're moaning because it's not enough?

Next up: it's my human right to ground my van on those steps, this is typical of the anti-car council, hard-working drivers, where was the consultation they want us all out of our cars by 2030 I will rip those barriers out myself you see if I don't

Its Wash Lane again https://www.eadt.co.uk/news/24108764.wash-lane-combs-ford-near-stowmarke...

I rode it last week actually, you have to be several levels of insane to think it's a good route when the water level is even low, when it's that high as in the news article, what on earth are you thinking?

Just to be clear this is literally just a cut through on two parallel roads that join up with each other less than 1km further on.

'Unrest' in village stops roadworks amid 'serious safety' concerns

Big fuss about what is obviously not a 'serious safety concern', yet when there is one the police do nothing for months and years. This pickup is outside the pub 100 yards from Garstang Police Station yet again tonight
