Interesting that according to the local rag the people trying to stop lawbreaking are the 'protestors', and not the drivers flouting the rules and insisting on their illegal progress.

Better than 'vigilantes' I suppose.

It was a difficult one to decide to post on but I decided in the longer term all the excusing and downplaying isn't going to help anyone.

"Also how do the 300-plus local people who made personal donations and loans to build the current hall feel about the Memorial Hall charging for children to attend school"

It's my human rights to drive and park anywhere for free.

“Drop off is between 8.30 and 8.50am. The first function at the hall begins at 9am."

except for Tuesdays when it's Fitsteps at 8.45 am - but don't let facts get in the way of a good whinge.

"The hall’s attitude seems to be ‘the school’s parking problem is the school’s problem, not ours’, and ‘if you want to park in the Memorial Hall car park, pay for it’"

There's always the chance that the passenger was checking the app.

The police seem to be of the opinion that the damaged road signs and worn road markings were more to blame for the driver failing to see the crossroads rather than him perhaps not paying attention because he was checking his map.  The police in the article claimed they "believed" that the driver was accessing a mapping app "as he was new to the area" (so that's alright then).

‘Seismic shift’: push toward SUVs makes driving unaffordable for many

Luxury vehicles, production cuts and soaring insurance prices have sent the cost of US car ownership out of control

https://www.theguardian.com/business/2024/jan/29/us-car-costs-insurance-...

Actually quite an interesting read on how the car companies moved everything toward creating better profit margins, meaning that there is an ever shrinking range of 'affordable' motor vehicles (even second hand) in a country which was basically designed around your owning a car to do anything

(edited for typo:accordable-->affordable)

Exeter man fears 'silent assassin' e-bikes in city centre

Mark Tyler, a former ITV Westcountry presenter, says he has narrowly missed being hit by an e-bike in Exeter on at least two occasions

"It's down to us to ensure that we don't step out unless we're absolutely convinced that everything's ok but sometimes you see a bike in the distance and before you know it, it's on top of you."

https://www.devonlive.com/news/devon-news/exeter-man-fears-silent-assass...

Gosh, Mike nearly hit on two occasions you say - let's you and me go for a bike ride, and see how long it takes us to notch up two "nearly hits"

Drivers are still going through Portland Terrace bus zone

Quote:

But yesterday morning, shortly after rush hour, 54 vehicles were seen driving through the zone near Westquay in just 30 minutes - despite signs and warnings.

My favourite reader comment has to be "The roads are for vehicles? Pavements for pedestrians. Not very entitled, its why they are there. The arrogance of councillors to take the road away from the public is astounding & they forget why they exist."

Victory for our great city' as clean air zones to be binned

More than 1,100 people signed the petition, which also opposed the introduction of the "15-minute-city"

yet here you are Council leader Jane Ashworth 5-6 years on doing nothing to protect your residents from pollution.

"The situation is fairly clear. Since 2018, when the Conservative Government told the city to clean up its pollution problems, there has been agreement that yes things need to change, and yes the decisions that are made and plans that are put forward need to come forward from within our city.

"Time after time, you will see a situation where something may be imposed by central Government that doesn't quite get it in terms of the way life works and traffic flows in our city. It's our intention to make sure that Government does not impose upon us a solution that doesn't meet our needs.

"We are working frequently with external contractors, with people who understand better than we do, the issues around polution in our city and we're trying to come up with something which says we do not need a CAZ (Clean Air Zone). What we need instead is some traffic changes around a specific area in Fenton.

Dinas Powys man was driving while disqualified for 18th time

Quote:

Lee Mears sped at 80mph in a 40mph zone, drove on the wrong side of the road around a blind bend and caused a lorry to brake sharply to avoid a crash.

The pursuit lasted 25 minutes as he was chased through the Spytty, Goldcliff and Nash areas of the city on the night of Friday, December 15 last year.

Mears hit another driver causing damage to his wing mirror, Cardiff Crown Court was told.

The 35-year-old and his Citroen Boxer van were only brought to a halt after a stinger device was deployed to deflate his tyres.

So he was jailed for 16 months and banned from driving for six years.... because driving bans are so effective at stopping him from driving......

Drivers fined over new temporary speed limit changes on A20 Sidcup Road, near Swanley Interchange

She added: “There must be so many people who are stressed, who have not been able to sleep or eat over the NIPs.

“People are going to lose their jobs and homes. Most people have a clean licence and now they are at risk of losing it over this.

“However, as highlighted to you again by a local journalist this week, there is still at least one sign stating 50mph and many Satellite Navigation systems are still showing 50mph and 70mph for this section of road.

One more crossing will fix it.

The driver is not thought to have been speeding and told police she did not see Oliver in time. It was dark and raining when the accident happened. (No mention of any police action.) His mum Ruth Hoy said: “I got the call every parent dreads."

Calls for talks to stop £100 car park fines for 'crossing road to use toilet'

Many drivers have fallen foul of the new strict parking regulations which were introduced at the St Ann Way retail park last year

Councillor Pam Tracey (C, Westgate) says her inbox is being filled with emails from people who have been given a parking charge notice. She says the problems with the charge notices there and other parking woes are the talk of Gloucester.

“It’s diabolical,” she said. “It’s one email after another. There’s loads of people being hit.

“They are fining people who park there in the evenings now too. As far as I’m concerned the Peel Centre never did their homework before they introduced these rules."

I rather think they did, Cllr Tracey and it doesn't sound like they want it be told their business by you. If it's the talk of Gloucester, then presumably it's only out of towners now being hit? How many of them are writing to you?

Staffordshire motorsport show 'evacuated due to high levels of carbon monoxide'

One disgruntled attendee wrote on Motorsport With Attitude's Facebook page: "Three-and-a-half hours drive to stay the weekend for events. I don't understand why you ran the arena shows inside with so little ventilation, the extractors were not enough and need big powerful fans to push the fumes out.

Another said: "We left after 1.5 hrs. Went to the show at 11.30 and car monoxide fumes were unbearable!!"

Parisians vote in favour of tripling parking costs for SUVs

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/feb/04/parisians-vote-in-favour-o...

Quote:

The new parking tariffs could come into force at the start of September. The cost of on-street parking for an SUV or 4x4 car would rise to €18 (£15) an hour in the centre of Paris and €12 an hour in the rest of the city.

The prices will apply to vehicles weighing more than 1.6 tonnes with a combustion engine or hybrid vehicles, and more than 2 tonnes for electric vehicles. The move will not apply to Paris residents’ parking.
