Yep- as you say!
I don't think it would be an easy mod to make without a new derailleur.
Would a different 7 speed derailleur have a b-screw? 7speed probably isn't a priority for manufacturers in this world of 10, 11, 12 speed so I'm not sure. Though having just looked, my lad's 8 speed Altus mech has a b-screw, and if it's a friction shifter then an 8 speed mech should work still. The Altus mech has a fairly long cage too.
Sounds like a great project, getting an old machine up and running again for more use
I think I may have a rather superannuated 7 speed Shimano mech lying around come to think of it. I will see if this is compatible and makes a difference- if memory serves it does have a b screw.
Yep - it's been good fun getting the bike more useable. I always have a bit of a Proustian Madeleine moment when I hear the free wheel ticking! With any luck he'll be able to let his future child ride it one day.
Thanks.
