On the eve of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, tens of thousands of people will flow through the streets of London to demonstrate their support for a safe climate future for all. And you can join in by cycling from Bristol and Swindon to take part in the biggest ever demonstration in support of action on climate change.
The demonstration, on Saturday, December 5, is called The Wave and is organised by the Stop Climate Chaos Coalition.
The Bristol and Swindon Blue Wave is a cycle ride to London from Thursday, December 3-December 5 for all those who want to make their voice heard, and supporters include SUSTRANS, Christian Aid, Oxfam, Bristol City Council and the Stop Climate Chaos Coalition.
The rides will leave from The Cathedral Park in Bristol and The Pilgrim Centre in Swindon, and there will be accommodation en route.
Cyclists will follow parts of the Sustrans National Cycle Route 4 which is a total of 157 miles, with overnight stops in Newbury and Richmond. The route runs from Gloucester to Newbury and Reading (via Bristol and Bath). The Severn & Thames Cycle Route includes all of the Kennet & Avon Cycle Route.
The Blue Wave caters for up to 250 riders on a first come, first serve basis, and if you want to join there are certain conditions you must meet. You must be competent to ride 70 miles per day, as the total distance is around 150 miles, and you must be over 18, unless accompanied by a parent or other agreed responsible adult and can show that you are physically capable of the ride.
There will be minibus support for the ride to carry bags, medical kits, puncture repair kits, and to provide emergency transport and refreshments at regular intervals for riders, as well as an optional charge for coach travel back from the march for those who do not wish to make their own way home.
Riders are free to collect sponsorship and organisers ask that half of any money raised be divided between Sustrans and the Diocese of Bristol for a sustainable development project in Uganda. The remaining half can be donated to any charity you wish.
To sign up and register visit www.bristolbluewave.org.uk. There will be a registration charge of £20.
There will also be a ride celebration on the evening of Friday, December 11 at St Stephen’s Church, Bristol, for all those who take part.
