Police have released pictures of an ‘aggressive cyclist’ they say may have verbally abused and spat on motorists in Bath.
The man, who they would like to speak to in connection with two incidents in recent months, was said to have spat on a car that went into an advanced stopping lane near Sainsbury’s.
A couple and their 11-year-old grandson said the cyclist responded by shouting abuse, spitting on the car, making explicit gesticulations and even reached in through the driver’s window to pull his glasses off his face and throw them inside the car.
“Once he started his ranting, there was no stopping him,” she told the Bath Chronicle.
“And this continued from the junction with the Lower Bristol Road, into the local car lane leading out of Bath right up to the traffic lights at the junction with Brougham Hayes, when we turned into Brougham Hayes and the cyclist continued on the Lower Bristol Road out of the city.”
“There is no doubt that many other motorists would have witnessed what went on and were equally terrified by the bullying tactics of this offensive cyclist.
“On each occasion the drivers tried to speak to the cyclist, but he was not prepared to hear what was to be said and just continued with his vociferous ranting and intimidation.”
Around eight weeks ago another driver said he received verbal abuse from a similar looking man of around 40 years old, who followed him “ranting and raving” from the traffic lights at the Pinesway end of Midland Bridge.
An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman confirmed they were investigating.
He said: "Bath police are appealing for information about an alleged road rage incident involving a cyclist and a car on Tuesday, December 3.
"It happened at around 5.20pm at the traffic lights at Pines Way, on the Lower Bristol Road.
"There was a dispute between a cyclist and the driver of a car in which it is claimed the driver was assaulted and sworn at and had his car kicked."
Anyone who witnessed either of the incidents, who recognises the man in the picture, or the man himself, is asked to contact Bath police on 101, quoting reference number 121059/13.
The images of the cyclist can be viewed here.

I do not condone his offensive behaviour in any way, shape or form, however? , . . ,
I do understand when your frustrations towards a few insensitive and dangerous drivers, boils over? . ... I have witnessed no amount of dangerous driving styles, acts of deliberate intimidation, downright ignorance and general dangerous driving towards pedestrians, cyclists, and other car drivers!!
Where will all this hatred towards each other end? How many deaths before we all realise that none of us own the road, and it is a privilege and luxury to be able to use the roads here??
Wrong Jonny. It's not a privilege for cyclists to use the roads, it's our right.
Like others, I don't condone this cyclists behaviour, but as a female cyclist I'm subjected to vile abuse on a fairly frequent basis by drivers - not to mention being subject to dangerous driving every single time I venture out on to the road. I've given up reporting it to the police. I tried a couple of times but they couldn't have been less interested.
Anyhow, how do you end up with your cars wheels unintentionally in an ASZ? Had the driver been taken over by aliens for that part of the journey?
cycling site, bias, whatever
End of the day while this case has more "to grab onto" vs a dangerous overtake or aggressive behavior by drivers, fact is that that's acceptable whereas don't you dare kick off at a motorist.
Spitting is a bit ott in everyday terms, even if the driver did something not quite right.
The flaw is that the system appears geared to protect the stronger ones (cars etc) vs what should be the case of supporting and siding with the more vulnerable party. But I guess "justice" through law is just abstract and there are cases with blatant lack of it throughout the law if you are willing to look.
Having looked at the picture of the cyclist what comes to mind is that it appears to be taken from the drivers side of the car, therefore did the driver indeed take the image and if so should be issued with a fixed penalty notice for using a phone while driving!
So have they charged the motorist for their offence? Or are we having a Nigella moment by the police?
It's a shame the Police and driving public don't show so much interest when it is cyclists who have there lives put at risk and abuse given to them by motorists!
Not condoning the cyclists actions because lets be honest we don't have the full story (and not likely to through the article of some local sensationalising hack) when the Police sit on their arses and do bugger all about bad/anti social driving what do they expect cyclists are going to do.
They all look the same to me
Can't really praise his methods
however
"The other incident came to light when the first victim mentioned it to his friends in the pub and one of them said the same thing had happened to them.

So perhaps we see a pattern
I wonder what could possibly drive someone to act in this way towards our universally considerate, careful and law-abiding motorists. How very odd. Hmm. Utterly baffling.
HA.
Police do nothing. Sounds like he's fed up with motorists who are threatening his life on a daily basis.
Exactly, having near been killed 3x this month talking has been the last of my thoughts...
He sounds like a right charmer!
