Former Euskadi rider Agustin Sagasti found dead in suspected suicide

Basque team's first race winner depressed ever since career-ending crash at age of 23...

Former Euskadi rider Agustin Sagasti, who won the team its first ever victory during the 1994 Tour of the Basque Country, has been found dead at his home in what is being treated as an apparent suicide. The news comes just days after Belgian cyclist Dimitri De Fauw took his own life.

Sagasti had reportedly been struggling with depression for years after his career was ended in 1995 at the age of 23 following a collision with a car in the Tour of Valles Mineros that left him in a coma and requiring numerous operations. He later successfully sued the race organisers for failing to control traffic.
