Spanish police break up doping ring

Former Kelme doctor among those arrested

Police in Spain have made 11 arrests in connection with an alleged doping ring and are questioning suspects regarding offences connected with doping in sport.

According to Spanish newspaper El Pais, the investigation, begun in August and codenamed Grial, revolves around one of those arrested, Walter Viru, formerly doctor to the Kelme pro cycling team.

Viru, a Peruvian by nationality, is an ex-colleague of Eufemiano Fuentes, the doctor at the centre of the ongoing Operacion Puerto investigation.

The newspaper adds that three cyclists are also among those who have been arrested. Two of those – one of whom is a paracyclist – are amateurs, while the third is Pedro Vera of the Spanish pro team Contentpolis-Ampo.

The arrests followed raids by the Guardia Civil on a number of private residences, pharmacies and clinics in Barcelona, Granada, Murcia and Valencia, and police confirmed in a statement that EPO and growth hormones had been found at some of those addresses.
