Video: Cyclist robbed of bike at gunpoint - and films it on his GoPro

Dramatic helmet camera footage from South Africa's Western Cape province...

A cyclist in South Africa has been robbed of his bike at gunpoint - and filmed the incident on his helmet camera, posting the dramatic footage to YouTube.

The theft took place in Somerset West in Western Cape Province and the film was uploaded to YouTube by the rider under the user name Lucky Jakkals.

In the description to the video, he says: "MTB ride on Saturday 31st May 2014 from Ongegund, last few km's before end of session. Armed gunman and 2 others stopped myself and took cellphone, car keys, oakleys and bike."

The man toting the gun looks straight at the camera at one point, but Lucky Jakkals adds: "Fortunately they did not have a clue what a GOPRO was and this is the evidence that will assist in their prosecution!"

I think you will find that the guy with the gun is actually just another well meaning cyclist. Please refer to rules #1, #2, #3 and #18

On a serious note, glad he didn't get shot.

He is very very lucky that they did not twig that the go pro was a camera.

Helmet cams are a double edged sword, people up to no good are not very keen on being filmed and it makes you a target, I am surprised there has not been a cyclist assaulted for his or her helmet cam yet.

I had an offer to spend a week out there at a beach house and, after the regular 'negative' crime articles, made up a convenient excuse and declined the offer........and I spent 13 years living out there! Used to think I was pretty 'streetwise' when it came to SA but reckon I'd be way off the mark now.

I actually rode on these trails last April with a saffer buddy. Quite amazing and depressing ! Generally the Cape is very safe in comparison to the North.

I hope he has better luck with SA police apprehending them as in the UK our plod would say they can't do anything without independent witnesses as footage cannot be used in evidence as it is not independent.

Why didn't he do a Danny McCaskill manoeuvre and knock the guy over with his bike?

Why didn't he throw his water bottle at the guy's gun, causing it to ricochet off a tree, into his own hand?

Its often grimly fascinating the difference between Road.cc's rather gentile threads and the ugly hate of Facebook. There's a whole chunk of particularly unpleasant overt racist comments on there. Its weird that anyone actually says that stuff. For public consumption. Ugghh.

Or the value of evidence, priceless.

Gosh, there sure are some bad places in SA, no sorry I meant bad people. There are a lot of nice places, but the bad people make you want to cross it off the list of places to visit.

And before anyone says they would have put up a fight, in SA they don't mind to just shoot you.

He should probably take that down in case it's regarded as unduly influencing a trial. Might be different rules in ZA of course.
