Video: How to sprint

Tips to get you to the finish line first

British Cycling has released a new video that shows you how to sprint as part of its Racesmart campaign to promote better racing.

The video, presented by former professional rider Dan Lloyd, explains that successful sprinting isn’t just about your maximum power, it’s also about positioning, timing, and measuring your effort throughout the race.

The video advises you to save as much energy as possible before your sprint by sheltering behind other racers in the peloton, and to take the wind direction into account when deciding when to make your move: you can go earlier if the wind is behind you.

It also gives you advice on positioning and how to avoid getting boxed in, gear selection and your level of effort.
