Sir Bradley Wiggins and Emma Pooley will be racing against the clock over the next 12 months in the red, white and blue colours of British national time champions after regaining their titles in South Wales today. Each completes a hat-trick of victories in the event.
Both were convincing victors in their respective races, which saw the men tackle two laps of an undulating 21 kilometre circuit starting and finishing at the Celtic Manor resort near Newport and taking them through the Monmouthshire countryside.
Defending champion Alex Dowsett of Movistar, looking to win the title for the fourth year in a row, was the last man out on the course at 8pm, with rain getting heavier by the time he and his biggest rivals came towards the end of the 42 kilometre course.
Dowsett was only third fastest at the halfway point, however, posting a time of 27 minutes 32 seconds for the opening 21 kilometres.
That had been bettered shortly beforehand by his two former Team Sky colleagues, Thomas briefly holding the quickest time for the first circuit of 27 minutes 7 seconds but eclipsed by more than half a minute by Wiggins, winner in 2009 and 2010, who went through in a scorching 26 minutes 29 seconds.
In setting what was at the time the fastest mark for the opening lap, Thomas reeled in the man who had started two minutes ahead of him, another former winner of the title, Garmin-Sharp’s David Millar, riding the event for the final time. The Scot abandoned at the halfway point.
Wiggins proved quickest again on the second lap as he crossed the line in a time of 53 minutes 56 seconds, 1 minute 8 seconds faster than Thomas who finished second, with Dowsett completing the podium a further 13 seconds back.
Earlier, Pooley regained the women’s time trial title, setting a time of 30 minutes and 18 seconds on the single lap of the 21 kilometre course. Second place went to Katie Archibald, while Dame Sarah Storey took third.
It’s the third time that Lotto-Belisol rider Pooley, a former world champion and Olympic silver medallist in the discipline, has won the national time trial championship, the previous occasions, like Wiggins, being in 2009 and 2010.
Wiggle Honda got three women into the top six but missed out on a podium spot, with Elinor Barker of Wales fourth, Laura Trott fifth and defending champion Joanna Rowsell sixth.
Scott Davies of Madison-Genesis took the men’s under-23 title from Cardiff-born Owain Doull, who turned pro this year with An Post-Chain Reaction, and there was another podium spot for Lotto-Belisol as Dan McLay, who rides for the Belgian outfit’s development squad, finished third.

Haha, good on her. It's nice to see a club sitting above some big name trade teams in the results!
It has nothing to do with being on a non UK registered team. Think about it.
Fenn - OPQS
Yates Brothers - Orica
Millar - Garmin
McEvoy, Rowsell, Thwaites - Netapp
Armitstead - Boels Dolmans
Garner - Giant Shimano
Barnes and Laws - United Healthcare
EDIT: Just had this
"For anyone asking why Pooley was down as riding for VC Norwich not Lotto (@GKam84), the registration form asked her club, not team!"
I was lucky enough to be there - great day of racing and the rain did not dampen spirits - roll on Sunday!
I love Pooley, massive respect for that woman! Chuffed for her as this is such a nice thing to have achieved after coming back to the pro scene!
My team mate came 16th, and on the Manx front our Anna C came 11th and Laura W 21st! Bloody good effort, sounds like it was an insane course!
Is this the same wiggins who does not have the form for le tour?
yeah he's that wiggins
Pooley seems to have entered as VC Norwich but ridden in Lotto Belisol colours. A bit odd.
I suspect it's because because Lotto-Belisol is not UK registered. They will want her to race in her pro team colours, of course.
Big Pooley fan here, so I'm really pleased for her.
It looks like an absolute bitch of a course for a time trial, 20% gradient at the finish. But I do not understand why the best women in the country still only do half the distance of the men.
She did race in Lotto Belisol colours - as did Daniel McLay in the U23 Mens race (he finished 3rd). Was lucky enough to sit in on an interview with her after the race. A really nice grounded lady who despite people thinking she's a "trouble maker" genuinely wants what's best for women's cycling. Keep an eye on @_pigeons_ on Twitter for the full interview
A few photos from the U23 Men's and Women's races - including Dame Sarah's champagne bottle incident....

Yep, someone who speaks their mind and wants to change things for the better is branded a troublemaker / ungrateful. Nothing new there. Will definitely look out for the interview.
I notice Dowsett is listed as riding for Movistar so perhaps her choice of VC Norwich is nothing to do with overseas registered teams?
Smashed it! Would be interesting to see Froome race it too...
Don't know what's going in with Pooley's team affiliation, but BC have he down as representing VC Norwich for this.

46.7kmh average?? Pffff, here - hold my beer.
Heck, that's impressive.
Great to see Emma Pooley back to winning ways too.
