Video: Where to watch the Tour de France in Yorkshire

Head for the hills to see the best action

Jenkin Road in Sheffield may not have the romance of l’Alpe d’Huez or the Tourmalet, but it’s a 30 percent grade at its steepest and, more importantly, it’s just 4km from the finish of the second stage of the Tour de France. That makes it GCN’s top tip for a viewing spot as the race’s visit to Yorkshire comes to a close.

In this video Simon Richardson shows you the best spots to watch the Tour in Yorkshire and discusses how to get from one another (top tip: don’t drive).

If you’re about to hot-foot to Yorkshire, it’s essential viewing.

John has been writing about bikes and cycling for over 30 years since discovering that people were mug enough to pay him for it rather than expecting him to do an honest day's work.

He was heavily involved in the mountain bike boom of the late 1980s as a racer, team manager and race promoter, and that led to writing for Mountain Biking UK magazine shortly after its inception. He got the gig by phoning up the editor and telling him the magazine was rubbish and he could do better. Rather than telling him to get lost, MBUK editor Tym Manley called John’s bluff and the rest is history.

Since then he has worked on MTB Pro magazine and was editor of Maximum Mountain Bike and Australian Mountain Bike magazines, before switching to the web in 2000 to work for CyclingNews.com. Along with road.cc founder Tony Farrelly, John was on the launch team for BikeRadar.com and subsequently became editor in chief of Future Publishing’s group of cycling magazines and websites, including Cycling Plus, MBUK, What Mountain Bike and Procycling.

John has also written for Cyclist magazine, edited the BikeMagic website and was founding editor of TotalWomensCycling.com before handing over to someone far more representative of the site's main audience.

He joined road.cc in 2013. He lives in Cambridge where the lack of hills is more than made up for by the headwinds.

From the website
"The roads remain open for walkers but cyclists will have to dismount and walk."

Are they seriously expecting cyclists to push their bikes once they get past the road closures?
Good luck with that! 40

0:15 24 yes, a little bit stricter here, like, f*** off you're not parking your caravan anywhere that's not a camping site.

02:15 Nice to get some perspective on the hill there, often you just can't tell watching TDF because there's nothing much to measure the steepness against.

During the race the commentators should call out the riders speeds a lot more often along with the gradients. I'll be looking forwards to seeing how bad my times through Epping look in comparison... They will be uploading to Strava right?

Lots of room on the hillsides for which most farmers are charging a fiver for the pleasure of standing in. How they will manage to control that with the number of people expected I have no idea. Certainly on Buttertubs, there are signs all over.

On Saturday I would go to Hawes and wander up to Buttertubs - lots of room on the hillsides - then back to a pub in Hawes. A friend of mine lives there and he knows his beer 1 The Spar in the town will be open from 4am, and there will be street parties and music on both days.

But I will be stopping in front of the telly in Shrewsbury, drinking a special TdF coffee blend produced by Taylors of Harrogate for the event. The advert in CW last week uses a bicycle motif with coffee mug stains.
