Video: Team Sky Superfan Rusty and his Chris Froome tribute

Banner made with help from rider’s Kenyan mentor – though he won’t see it on this year’s Tour

Few will miss Chris Froome at the rest of this year’s Tour de France following his crash yesterday more than Rusty Morris. Dubbed ‘Team Sky’s Superfan,’ he contacted the rider’s mentor in Kenya, David Kinjah, to help him with the wording for a banner acknowledging the star’s African roots.

Rusty and his wife Kay, both retired and from Bristol, clock up thousands of miles each year following the team. Their trips are regularly featured on the Team Sky website and they have also built a good relationship with team staff and riders since the team launched in 2010.

Kinjah supplied Rusty with the words Simba wa Njika – Lion of the Savannah – for his banner, which sadly won’t now be seen by Froome on the climbs of the Alps or Pyrenees on this year’s Tour.

Rusty is featured in the latest film in Rapha’s The Little Things series, which with unfortunate timing has been released today, the day after Froome’s title defence came to grief on the rain-soaked roads of northern France.
