Commonwealth Games cyclists go training... on a motorway

Quartet of Sr Lankan riders spotted on M74 near Glasgow this morning

Four cyclists from Sri Lanka who are in Scotland to compete in the Commonwealth Games, which have their opening ceremony tonight at Glasgow’s Celtic Park, were this morning stopped by police – after taking to the M74 motorway for a training ride.

The quartet were spotted close to the exit for Motherwell and Hamilton, with a Police Scotland spokesperson saying, "Police attended the scene and advice and assistance was given."

Among those who spotted the riders was Olympic triathlon bronze medallist Jonathan Brownlee, who is competing in Glasgow and tweeted a picture of the riders.

The episode is reminiscent of one that happened 12 years ago when the Commonwealth Games took place in Manchester and a pair of cyclists from Kenya decided to go for a training ride on the M61, covering 17 miles before police pulled them over.

Probably just a stupid publicity stunt. Next thing you know, some fool will be cycling through the Channel Tunnel....

Blue signs, on the left hand side, solid white line, no cars in it - looks like a cycle lane to me.

Oops! Sorry! My mistake! It can't be a cycle lane as we're in the UK and it's a sensible width.

Dunno, travel along any motorway for a short while, and you find someone parked in the hard shoulder/"cycle lane" on the phone, or havinfg a picnic, or just stopped for a wazz

Bloody motorway is probably a lot lot safer than most of the A roads what have been "motorway-ised", even if you don't play the stats game
