Video: Good Samaritan cyclist helps driver who is in a fix

Bike rider turns out to be vehicle mechanic and gets motorist back on the road

Most of us who have encountered the puncture fairy or some other mechanical problem while out on the bike will hopefully have had another cyclist stop and offer help, but here’s a new spin on it – a rider who turns out to be a mechanic and helps a woman with a problem with her car.

The cyclist, who posted the footage to YouTube under the name GfromHull, pushes the car somewhere safe then quickly diagnoses the problem – a poor connection to the crank shaft sensor multi-plug – and gets the engine started.

He then refuses to accept payment for his assistance, proof that whether on two wheels or four, camaraderie still exists on the road.

Simon joined road.cc as news editor in 2009 and is now the site’s community editor, acting as a link between the team producing the content and our readers. A law and languages graduate, published translator and former retail analyst, he has reported on issues as diverse as cycling-related court cases, anti-doping investigations, the latest developments in the bike industry and the sport’s biggest races. Now back in London full-time after 15 years living in Oxford and Cambridge, he loves cycling along the Thames but misses having his former riding buddy, Elodie the miniature schnauzer, in the basket in front of him.

It's no coincidence that this is in the North.

I liked the fact that there was another nice guy at the end too. Nice to see.

Clearly our hero doesnt wear cleats - trying to push a car in cleats is a recipe for disaster.
As i myself have found to my chagrin

I loved the positive article in the Daily Mail - highlighting how everyone can get along and treat the road as a shared space, and how looking after one another leads to a better experience all round. And ALL those positive comments from well-wishers.

no, ignore me. That might not have happened.

Is it wrong my first thought was to wonder what sort of cleats he has on his shoes? It would be difficult to push a car wearing SPD-SLs!

Nice to see anyone helping someone else out nowadays.

Careful - castigation can make you go blind!

Amazing. Sometimes, to paraphrase bike snob nyc, I stop driving THE CAR THAT I OWN to help a cyclist with a mechanical too. Because, you know, only absolute idiots think that tribally.

Although it is probably somewhat easier, on average, to help someone with a bike mechanical than with a car mechanical.

Helpful people, rude people. Some ride bikes, some drive cars.

Good to see that we're perpetuating the "them and us" culture.

I held the door open for a stranger at the weekend, unfortunately I wasn't in cycling kit so it's not much of a story I'm afraid.

Well done, sir! Hopefully this results in at least one more driver sympathetic to sharing the road with cyclists. 41

Also glad to see nobody nicked his bike while he was pushing the car down the road.
