Justice sought for Wiggins' dad death

Sister seeks answers to unexplained death

Two years exactly since the death of Bradley Wiggins's father Gary, a former Australian champion cyclist, the family are still hoping to bring those believed to be responsible to justice.

The 55-year-old alcoholic was found beaten to death in a street in the town of Aberdeen, New South Wales. He died from haemorrhaging caused by a blow to the back of the head.

Gary Wiggins's sister, Glenda Hughes, told The Herald she cannot rest until those she believes are responsible for her brother's death are caught and convicted

A coroner stopped short of recommending charges against two men last February, but found that Mr Wiggins was probably assaulted on the evening of January 24, 2008.

Mr Wiggins, who raced in Europe in the 1970s and 1980s, was found on the morning of January 25 and died later that day.

He represented Australia several times at world track championships. He was national champion in the 1 km time trial, and the 4000m team pursuit as part of the Victoria state team.

"I know in my heart and my soul that it's not right and I want the residents of Muswellbrook and Aberdeen to know that I'm not going to give up until justice is served," Mrs Hughes said.

She conducted her own inquiries in the days after Mr Wiggins's death and discovered a web of secrecy and innuendo.

"There are people who know what happened to Gary," she said. "I heard all sorts of things when I was there. I still have a lot of trouble knowing that the people who are responsible for this are still walking around free."

The inquest last year was told that Mr Wiggins appeared sober when he attended a McQueen Street, Aberdeen, home at about 8.30pm on January 24. He was unconscious when he was dragged from the house about 15 minutes later and dumped on a footpath. A passing car beeped its horn and Mr Wiggins got up and walked away. He was later found collapsed.

What's a "death quiz"? Sounds like an overly severe penalty for not knowing the capital city of Mongolia.
