Fake 'police' in Cambridge shake down cyclist for £30

Police in Cambridge are hunting for two fake ‘police officers’ who mugged a cyclist for cash.

The incident happened on Tuesday January 20th at about 6pm when the victim, a man in his early 20s, was cycling along Northfield Avenue in Cambridge when he was stopped near to The Ship pub by two men who claimed to be police officers.

The victim was searched by the two men who found and confiscated £30 in cash. They accused him of being a drug dealer on a stolen bike before saying they needed to make a call to carry out some checks on him.

The two men then got into their vehicle, a dark coloured car, and shouted back to the victim: "You have just been mugged mate".

Chief Inspector Chris Balmer, Safer Neighbourhood Manger for Cambridge City, said: "Following this incident I am asking members of the public to be cautious. If they are approached by police the officer should always show their ID, if they don't, ask for it.

"If they do not have proof of ID you should call police to make a report on 101 or 999 if you are in immediate danger."
