Crash puts Steve Abraham's Year record attempt in jeopardy

Rider faces surgery after breaking two bones in ankle when hit by moped in Somerset this morning

Steve Abraham's attempt to beat Tommy Godwin's record for riding the longest distance in a year could be over after he broke two bones in an ankle following a collision with a moped today near Wellington, Somerset.

The news was anounced in a series of tweets from Abraham's official Twitter account the first of which, posted at lunchtime today, read:

Shortly after 7pm this evening, three more tweets were posted confirming the extent of his injuries.

Abraham, who is based in Milton Keynes, is attempting to break Tommy Godwin's record of 75,065 miles, set in 1939.

As of Friday, he was more than 2,600 miles ahead of Godwin's pace.

More to follow.

These attempts are always going to come down to who manages best with injury and illness.

This one sounds serious, and is going to be an enormous setback - but Searvogel is going to have problems too.

Awful news. I'd not put it past him to carry on one legged though.

When I woke up this morning and it was blowing a hoolie and the rain was going horizontal, it was the thought of 'that bloke doing the year record' going out for 200 miles plus in the same weather that galvanised me into putting my cycle shorts on and turning out for the club ride.

All the best Steve.

Unfortunate for this chap, but he wouldn't have beaten what Kurt Searvogel is going to stomp out.

Absolutely gutted for Steve and dearly hope that he can continue. I wish him and Kurt the very, very best of luck but really don't think this is the time to bring up petty rivalries Jamminatrix.

IMO Steve and Kurt are attempting different records. Steve specifically after Tommy's - on a Road bike.
