"Do the right thing" police tell driver who killed 15 year old West Brom cyclist

West Midlands police have urged the driver of the Volkswagen car that hit and killed a young cyclist last week to "do the right thing and come forward".

Adam Jones, from Wednesbury, was crossing the junction of Beacon View Road and Walsall Road in West Bromwich with his bicycle just after 7.30pm on Thursday March 26 when he was struck by the Volkswagen Bora which was travelling from Stone Cross towards Walsall.

The 15-year-old was flung through the car windscreen and was pronounced dead a short time later.

The driver of the VW callously abandoned the vehicle and ran from the scene.

West Midlands Police has been using Faceboook and Twitter, as well as conventional media channels, to appeal for help tracing the driver.

"We've had a fantastic response to our appeal for assistance as well as over 400 comments on our Facebook page," police spokeswoman Sarah Buxton told the Express and Star.

"We appreciate the help from the public and officers are now sifting through the information and will follow up new any lines of enquiry provided by it."

Last week, police released images of the car, showing the damage caused by the impact when it hit Adam Jones.

The car is a bright blue colour with distinctive stickers on the rear windscreen and the vehicle registration number MA52 XVV. The registered keeper of the car sold the vehicle several months ago and has been eliminated from police inquiries.

Anyone with information is aksed to contact the Collision Investigation Unit on 101 or the charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111 quoting log 1989 of 26 March.

John has been writing about bikes and cycling for over 30 years since discovering that people were mug enough to pay him for it rather than expecting him to do an honest day's work.

He was heavily involved in the mountain bike boom of the late 1980s as a racer, team manager and race promoter, and that led to writing for Mountain Biking UK magazine shortly after its inception. He got the gig by phoning up the editor and telling him the magazine was rubbish and he could do better. Rather than telling him to get lost, MBUK editor Tym Manley called John’s bluff and the rest is history.

Since then he has worked on MTB Pro magazine and was editor of Maximum Mountain Bike and Australian Mountain Bike magazines, before switching to the web in 2000 to work for CyclingNews.com. Along with road.cc founder Tony Farrelly, John was on the launch team for BikeRadar.com and subsequently became editor in chief of Future Publishing’s group of cycling magazines and websites, including Cycling Plus, MBUK, What Mountain Bike and Procycling.

John has also written for Cyclist magazine, edited the BikeMagic website and was founding editor of TotalWomensCycling.com before handing over to someone far more representative of the site's main audience.

He joined road.cc in 2013. He lives in Cambridge where the lack of hills is more than made up for by the headwinds.
