Lightweight, the German carbon fibre specialist renowned for producing some of the lightest wheels in the world, has unveiled its new Fernweg VR 60 wheelset.
As its name implies, the new Fernweg VR 60 wheel has a 60mm deep rim and is available in both clincher and tubular versions. Lightweight first introduced the Fernweg wheel range, with an 80mm rim option, way back in 2012.
The shape of the rim profile is said to provide stable handling in crosswinds. Lightweight says the profile benefits time trialling and triathlon applications.
“Even gusty cross-winds won’t deter this wheel from its line, so you can stay in the aero position for your best athletic performance. When others have to sit up, you stay comfortably on your aero bars and leave your competitors behind,” says the company.
Of course, it’s a light wheel. The tubular version is just 625g with the clincher wheel increasing to 705g. The low weight is achieved due to Lightweight’s construction technique, which sandwiching a foam core with thin laminate walls to create the rims. Moulded carbon spokes and carbon hubs, a signature of Lightweight, help to keep the weight low. Obviously that's not as light as the company's Meilenstein Obermayer, which come in at a staggering 940g for the pair.
This new wheel joins the company’s existing V80 in a range aimed at those cyclists wanting the best possible aerodynamics, whether for racing or general road use. Lightweight recommends the new V60 is paired with the V80. The new V60 is in production now and prices are €2,385 for the tubular and €2,425 for the clincher.

There is no wheelset. This is a front wheel only from what I have gleaned elsewhere. The rear wheel is another 2500 euros (VR80), and the weight of the two combined is around 1600g, so I'll stick with lusting after Reynolds RZRs and Zipp 404s, I think.
Lightweight, like your wallet. I wonder if Aldi will copy these?
I'm pretty sure 625 g is not the weight of the wheelset but just the front wheel. I think the lead should be corrected.
Yes, they say it is recommended to be paired with the VR 80.
Agreed, it's a bit unusual to market/ sell wheels individually and to quote individual front wheel weight alone. What does the wheelset weigh?
Is 625g light for a tubular front wheel? not sure it is particularly, given the price.
i thought lightweight went out of business
Maybe you're thinking of Litespeed?
Not that they're out of business but they seem to be much quieter these days.
It was Mad Fiber that went bust.
