Hertfordshire police enforcing cycling ban in Hatfield

Fixed Penalty Notices to be handed out to repeat offenders in pedestrian zones

Police in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, will this week be out in the town centre enforcing a ban on riding bicycles on the pavement and in pedestrian zones, with £30 fixed penalty notices being issued to repeat offenders.

The Welwyn Hatfield Times reported that police will be stopping all cyclists found riding their bikes in areas where cycling is not allowed, and that repeat transgressors will be fined.

The police campaign runs from tomorrow, Wednesday, through to Friday, and No Cycling signs have been erected in the relevant area.

PCSO Kate Parker told the newspaper: “Cycling on the footpath and pedestrian area of the town centre is anti-social and residents have told us it is a real problem, so it has become one of our neighbourhood priorities. We hope these [awareness] days will remind cyclists that the town centre is not a cycle track.

amehzing. the first appearance for the galleria on road.cc. unlike mr hatter, i love that place for some reason. and it's bunkum to suggest that it killed the town centre, which was a desolate warzone long before either the galleria or saving private ryan arrived in town.

I cycle through Hatfield daily on my commute and the town is relatively well serverd with bike lanes so there is little excuse for cycling on the pavement.

One thing I would say is that the town centre was all but killed a decade or so ago by the above picture galleria and is now a pretty desolate place and this has no doubt attracted some unsociable cycling.

I agree - I cycle through Hatfield en-route from St Albans to Welwyn Garden City and it's the cycling high point - some very good cycle lanes, although most are infested with students and dog walkers.

Any chance the police will be informing the pedestrians that there's a perfectly good footpath to walk 6 abreast on?
