Sustrans has this week announced its new Chief Executive, the man behind planning for London’s cycle superhighways.
Xavier Brice will take up his new role this June, having come from Transport for London, where he has worked on the “Fit for the Future Stations” programme - a controversial modernising scheme that has been the subject of industrial action by staff unions in recent weeks.
Mr Brice also designed a new cycling strategy for London, which led to the introduction of the Cycle Superhighways and Cycle Hire Scheme.
Sustrans said of the appointment: “Xavier is passionately committed to sustainable transport. A lifelong cyclist and public-transport aficionado, he is a long-term Sustrans supporter with a garage full of bikes of various shapes and sizes.”
Bill Stow, Chair of Trustees at Sustrans, said: “I'm really excited by this appointment. Xavier will bring both highly relevant experience and a range of skills to the CEO role. I'm looking forward to working with him as Sustrans moves into a new era.”
Mr Brice said: "I’ve been enthusiastic about the benefits of cycling for a long time, both professionally and in my home life – where I’m introducing my young daughters to the joys of getting around by bike. As a long-term supporter of Sustrans I’m looking forward to leading the organisation and making walking and cycling a more attractive and practical option for communities across the UK.”
Xavier will replace Sustrans’ current Chief Executive Malcolm Shepherd, who has been in his current role since 2008. Shepherd retire at the end of March, with current Operations Director, Andy Wistow, acting as interim CEO until Xavier joins Sustrans in June.

Some of their routes are spectacular, Devon coast to coast, and some great for commuters, Bristol -Bath path. But they are few and far between and many people experience the crummier paths and it sets their view of Sustrans, for the worse. Will be good to see them focus on day to day useful routes in towns and cities. Not just the big prestige railway path projects.
I suppose you can hope for change, but then look at TfL and the quiet routes, look at how the superhighways have panned out....
Mind you one question, Is there a charity tasked with creating Motorways for cars? Is there a charity that is dedicated to developing the trunk roads in the UK? WTF is there a charity developing cycle routes! Maybe i am under the misguided understanding that there is a Department of TRANSPORT!
I know it is a ridiculus idea, joined up thinking, design bus, trains, cars, pedestrians, cycleways etc to compliment each other!
Here's to change at sustrans. This guy sounds like someone with his own ideas and I can only say that any new ideas are better than what they do at the moment!
Good news. Sustrans has done amazing things for cycling, way before any of it was popular and often in the face of huge resistance from local authorities. Let's hope he can inject some of the new London zing with infrastructure into the provinces.
'A lifelong cyclist and public-transport aficionado' Let's hope he can use his influence in these fields to better link the two.....
Perhaps it's different in Londo-tropolis but our here in the real world...Only 2 bikes allowed on a train on most rail networks at any one time is ridiculous.
Be nice if they switched tpo making cycle routes usable for TRANSPORT, instead of badly surfaced, stupidly indirect crap and sticking daft signs on dangerous minor roads. Not holding my breath.
Couldnt have put it better myself.
