Cannondale launches new women's team + video

Cannondale Girls are six riders from a variety of disciplines who plan to help encourage more women to ride

Cannondale has launched a new women’s cycling team to race in disciplines from road cycling, mountain biking and cyclocross, and to inspire other women to cycle.

Launched at the London Bike Show yesterday, Cannondale Girls is the second women’s team sponsorship announcement from the bike brand within a month, and features six elite riders from different disciplines, who will race, as well as attending events to help encourage other women to cycle.

Team members are Adel Tyson-Bloor (DH/Enduro/XC MTB, Track Road and TT), Diane Lee (Cyclocross, Triathlon and Road), Emily Benham (MTB Orienteering, Fat Bike and XC MTB), Maxine Filby (XC/Enduro/DH MTB and Road), Natalie Creswick (Road, MTB Orienteering and XC MTB) and Phoebe Sneddon (Cyclocross, Road and XC MTB)

Cannondale says: “Cannondale Girls are a new team for 2016. Made up of six riders, each competing both Nationally and Internationally across multiple disciplines. The aim of the team is to race at a top level but most importantly have fun and inspire other girls to get on their bikes, helping them discover the joys of riding.”

Tyson-Bloor, formerly of Team Mule Bar Girl, told road.cc at the London Bike Show Cannondale Girls are planning events for members of the public to get involved with, and a couple of the riders are trained coaches, and will be able to provide expert advice to those getting into the sport. Tyson-Bloor (pictured below, left) recently moved into cross-country and downhill mountain biking, a discipline which she says marries the short bursts of power she’s been used to on the track, and her previous experience as a skiier.

Earlier this month Cannondale announced itself as sponsor of a new WorldTour women’s team, Cylance Pro Cycling Team, which includes Shelley Olds and Valentina Scandolara. Some of the Cylance athletes will target the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Women's teams are like bikes themselves; it's an N+1 climate so keep them coming.  But unless Hugh Hefner is co-sponsoring, isn't "girls" pretty lame?   Vaughters' riders aren't "boys."
