Sheffield station bike hub expansion given go-ahead

Plans to expand the bike hub at Sheffield railway station have been approved by planning officers. The second phase of the project will see space for another 156 bikes added via a new mezzanine floor within the current facility, which already offers space for 400 bikes.

The Star reports that Midland Station is Grade II listed and that therefore listed building consent was needed from the council before work could commence.

A report by planning officers said:

“The works will preserve the special character of this part of the building, as the mezzanine will be a free-standing structure which does not interfere with the external walls and roof.

“The proposal will deliver sustainability benefits by encouraging sustainable access to the site as a result of increasing the capacity of a facility which is obviously well-used.”

The £850,000 cycling facility, which is in the south wing of the main station building, was opened by East Midlands Trains in 2014. As well as bike parking, it also features changing rooms, toilets, bike hire and a repair shop called Russell’s Bike Shed.

Anyone wishing to use the bike hub can purchase a key fob from Russell’s for £10 and this provides lifetime access.
