#mycyclingweekend: Broken bones, busted bikes & mashed faces

We asked for the stories of your worst cycling crashes on Friday, and you guys delivered + this week's #CycleSurgery winner...

If you had a read through our pre-weekend #mycyclingweekend article, you'd know that this crashy weekend had nothing to do with blood, gore, and morbid curiosity. All of us here at road.cc and the folks at Cycle Surgery wanted to hear stories of inspiration and injury comebacks.

And that's what we got.

I mean, we'd be lying if the images of wonky wrists, x-rays of half elbows, smashed-up teeth, and bloodied faces didn't have us wincing, gawping, and swiping through the #mycyclingweekend picture bank more intensely than normal.

We know you're all here for that exact same reason.

But, that doesn't mean that amongst those gorey images there aren't a couple of stories that are worth awarding #mycyclingweekend prizes to.

The first of such stories, and the winner of the Cycle Surgery yellow pump, is Chris's.

Chris also goes by the Instagram handle applescrapples and had an unfortunate descending incident that left him with a bloody face and a totally annihilated Kinesis CrossLight.

He says he misjudged his speed and ended up in, on, and around the back of a BMW M3, which we imagine came off slightly better in the collision stakes.

Congratulations Chris, your prize will be in the post as soon as you've emailed us your address. Check your Instagram inbox!

Chris's combination shot of his battered face and bashed-up bike might have rolled away with this week's #mycyclingweekend Cycle Surgery prize, but we couldn't overlook the next entry for its story.

So, Dan England, we'd like to send you a pair of road.cc socks for your story. Who knew rogue branches could cause so much damage?

We're pleased to see you're back in the saddle though. Congratulations on both fronts!

Keep an eye on your Instagram inbox for instructions on how to make sure your prize makes it to you.

The list of runners up follows here, including some absolutely stunningly brutal injuries.

Tommy Haywood sent in this shot of his elbow that looks like it's been completely sheered away from itself.

While pins and wires might be good for fixing elbows, that Shimano shifter looks like a goner.

Twitter user @myboringhandle, also known as Charlie sent in this shot of his trans-scaphoid perilunate dislocation.

That doesn't only look incredibly painful, it looks terrifying. What went through your mind when you looked down to see your wonky wrist?

if it's not your hands and wrists taking the brunt of the force when you come off your bike, it seems to be your face.

This is the first of Paul O'Brien's #mycyclingweekend entries this week. We hope your teeth are alright now Paul.

After that we've got Dan England's second photo of his run-in with a tree branch.

Of course, it's not just road bikes that do this sort of damage.

Car doors can hurt too, eh Paul?

Mountain bikes are also risky business, especially if you're a little rusty. Franc Lowe discovered that.

We'll be back to normal, non-stomach turning #mycyclingweekend action next week and you can get involve dvia the normal routes of Twitter and Instagram.

It's not too late to get involved this week either, just pop a photo up on wither social media site with the #mycyclingweekend and #CycleSurgery hashtags clearly included in the caption.

Safe riding everyone - we don't want to see any new photos next time we ask for your worst crash stories!

I had a nasty surprise about 4 maybe 5 years ago in the wet about mid day; somehow I crashed off my MTB on a cycle path at about 20MPH (no helmet, just a head cover and thick metal sunglasses with thick plastic lenses), was knocked out, front upper tooth came out, bottom lip had deep cut, sunglasses bent, nasty scratches on the lenses, bloody gash from chin to forehead, fractured left arm.

Loose tooth was cemented in, then later root canalled because dead (really stupid *), had my front lip stitched (still scarred), was off work for two courses of antibiotics over two weeks and still have a scar from the sunglasses bridge scraping.

* Later the dead tooth roots fractured, so the root ends were extracted (brutal) and replaced by a ceramic bridge machined while I waited at my dentist.  Never ever get a Root Canal, dead teeth cannot be 100% cleaned of dead pulp and sealed, so can host nasty bacteria which can infect the whole body!

I've worn full face helments since and they took damage from later accidents rather than my face, first MET Parachutes (stupid straps etc. and no chin guard padding, so chin cut once), then much better Urge Down-o-Matic ones.  Fortunately it's been over a year since I crashed last, given arm fractures etc. are not fun...
