London cyclist killed in collision with vehicle at French race

Ian Bashford, 60, hit by support vehicle 200 metres from finish line at today's Duo Normand two up time trial...

A cyclist from London has died following a collision with a vehicle while taking part in a race in France.

France 3 reports that Ian Bashford, aged 60, was killed 200 metres from the finish line of the Duo Normandin Marigny when the driver of a support vehicle at the trial veered into his path at around 1230 today.

His partner in the 35th edition  of the  two-up time trial, Peter Grey, was not hurt.

The 27-year-old driver of the vehicle involved was taken to hospital to be treated for shock.

Mr Bashford was pronounced dead at the scene despite the efforts of paramedics to revive him.

According to France 3, his team mates at the South London-based Old Portlians Cycling Club asked organisers to allow the event to continue.

In a statement on its website, the club said: "It is with great sadness that we have to report that Ian Bashford was killed today while taking part in the Duo Normand.

“Ian was hit by a car during the final descent in to the finish area. Our thoughts are with his wife and family at this very sad time.”

Organisers and police are investigating the incident.

As someone who both raced and drove a support car for others round the circuit today, my thoughts are with Ian's family, friends & club mates.
