British Cycling to reveal result of internal investigation into Shane Sutton today

British Cycling is to reveal the results of its internal investigation into Shane Sutton later today. Sutton resigned from his role as technical director in April having been suspended from his position when the governing body first launched its investigation into allegations of sexism.

The Telegraph reports that British Cycling’s board will meet today to consider the findings of its internal investigation with a public statement due later on.

Should Sutton be cleared, the organisation is nevertheless likely to postpone any decision on whether or not to offer him a position until after the conclusion of the independent review that is currently being carried out by UK Sport.

That report, due later this year, is a broader one looking into allegations of sexism and discrimination within British Cycling’s World Class Programme. The internal investigation, led by non-executive director Alex Russell, has been dealing with the allegations made by Jess Varnish and subsequently backed up by other riders, including Victoria Pendleton.

Varnish lost her contract with British Cycling in April and expressed her belief that the decision had not been made on performance grounds. Among her allegations were that Sutton told her to “go and have a baby” when she was dropped from the Olympic programme.

Earlier this week, Sutton said he was ‘confident’ he would be cleared of wrongdoing and returned to his position as technical director at British Cycling. However, the board is understood to be split over whether to invite him back should he be cleared.
