A Scottish oil rig worker is among three cyclists seriously injured when a driver who subsequently tested positive for drink and drugs crashed into a group ride on Spain’s Costa Blanca yesterday, killing two people.
Scott Gordon, aged 46 and from Aberdeen, is currently in hospital in Denia being treated for chest injuries and multiple fractures to his arms and legs after the incident which happened at 8.30am yesterday morning.
Mr Gordon’s wife Corinne, who moved with him and their two daughters to Javea in 2013, is at his bedside in hospital where his condition is described as “serious but stable,” reports the Scottish Sun.
He had been riding with five other members of the triathlon section of the Club Atlètic Llebeig de Xàbia on the N-332 between Xàbia and Dénia, a popular part of Spain for cycling holidays among riders from the UK.
According to Julio Almazan, a former president of the club, the group was hit head-on by the driver, a 28-year-old woman, after her Ford Mondeo crossed onto the wrong side of the carriageway.
The motorist is believed to have fallen asleep at the wheel after staying out all night and was said to be four times over the drink-drive limit as well as failing a drugs test.
She appeared in court today and has been remanded in custody, according to a statement from the Gandia Investigating Court number two, which said “She is being investigated on suspicion of two crimes of manslaughter, three crimes of serious wounding and a road traffic offence.”
The two cyclists who lost their lives were named yesterday as Eduardo Monfort – whose father is an ex-mayor of Xàbia – and Luis Alberto Contreras, whose son Andrés Contreras is among the three who were injured.
One of the victims was taken by air ambulance to hospital in Valencia and has been reported to have sustained life-threatening injuries. Besides Mr Gordon, the other injured rider was named as José Antonio Albi.
The Scottish Sun reported the regional health authority as saying: “Scott Gordon was operated on yesterday at Denia Hospital for multiple fractures.
“He is currently in intensive care where he is serious but stable.”
Tend to agree with Rendel - while I'm sure well-intended, it's an ill-judged post.
Well Soudal do sell their products in the UK too. It's what I buy in B&Q because it's the only brand I've heard off and that's from cycling.

Welcome to Car Crashes into Building.
You need to watch cyclocross. Maximum 1 hour of racing. Awesome edge of the seat stuff (especially when MVP isn't riding).
Cases of hung, drawn and caught? Or if not in favour of the rules, hung, drawn and court erred?
I think that's fair. Just noting that as you've written that you can see that it's incredibly hard to get away from any narrative of "we need at...
