Giro d'Italia Stage 12: Fernando Gaviria makes it a hat-trick of wins

Colombian sprinter extends points classification lead

Quick Step Floors rider Fernando Gaviria has taken his third stage victory of the 100th edition of the Giro d’Italia in Reggio Emilia this afternoon.

The Colombian outsprinted Jakub Mareczko of Wilier Triestina-Selle Italia) at the end of the 229km stage from Forli to take the win and keep the lead of the points classification.
For the third time in the race, Irish rider Sam Bennett of Bora-Hansgrohe finished third in the sprint.

Following his victory, Gaviria said: “I was worried when my lead out man Maximiliano Richeze had a flat tyre because the peloton was riding very fast at that point.

“But he came across and it was perfect. I'm not the best sprinter of this Giro: that's André Greipel because he's got many more wins in his career than me but right now, I'm the sprinter with the best form and the best legs thanks to the preparation.

“And that's how I'm here with my third victory.”

Team Sunweb’s Tom Dumoulin retains the race lead. After the stage, he said: “It's been a good day for me. A typical sprinters’ stage.
“It was faster than I thought. Gaviria seems to be the best sprinter here. Congratulations to him. I hope for a similar quiet day for myself as the race leader tomorrow.”

I hear Thomas is out now 2

I'm rooting for Dumoulin, I put a bit of money on him at 9/2. I just don't like  Quintana but fear Dumoulin lacks the team, just like Vuelta '15.

You can never rule Nibali out!

Nibali isn't badly placed is he?

Can climb and descend and not a bad time trial-er either.

I reckon he could win it if he can take time out of Dumoulin in the mountains then hold his own on the final time trial. 

Quintana not so versatile, may struggle to capitalise on his second place?

  • Nibali was only 45 seconds quicker than Quintana on the ITT over 40km (on a pretty windy day).
  • Nibali was 60 seconds slower than Quintana in the only mountain selection so far.
  • There are 29km of ITT remaining.
  • There are 20+ mountains left to climb.

Nothing is decided yet, and Nibali can definitely turn it on when he gets a sniff of weakness... But on Blockhaus he didn't look stellar - admittedly in last year's Giro he looked dead and burried after two weeks also. Pinot and Mollema are better placed than Nibali, Mollema was within 10 seconds of Nibali on the ITT.

It's going to be interesting.
