Shaun Ryder: Cycling got me off drugs

Hours a day in the saddle didn't deal with the mental toll of heroin though...

Sean Ryder has said that cycling got him off drugs.

He told the Guardian that he would ride through the day to detox, but that it was still a huge struggle to kick heroin.

He said: “It was cycling that got me off drugs. I’d get on my bike very early in the morning and keep cycling until very late at night, day after day, until it was out of the system.

“I was pedalling from 8am until 11pm. But once that’s done, you still have to deal with the mental stuff.”

The Happy Mondays singer, who says he left school without knowing the alphabet, said that he tried multiple routes to get clean.

He said: “Trying to quit heroin using a stomach implant was disastrous. I tried it in 1995 when it was still a new thing.

“The problem was that they withdraw you while you’re out unconscious, and I expected to wake up feeling fine. But I didn’t. I woke up and it was fucking murderous.”

Yes, he did have serious issues. Drug addiction consumes you 24 hours a day. If you have to ride a bike for 15 hours at a stretch to avoid being in the environment that triggers your drug taking, then the more serious issue would be not riding your bike.

Would you also have suggested that Amanda Coker of Kurt Searvogel too have serious issues that need counselling to sort our their mental state?

I think that Mr Ryder has serious issues,

he needs counselling to help him sort out his mental state. Riding a bike from 8 in the morning to 11 at night is extreme to say the least. Pro cyclists only do around 5 hrs on a tour

Never ridden audax then Jimnm?  15 hrs would be a quickish 300km for me.

Should have been an UberEats more like it. I've seen some of their Stravas, it's mental what you have to do today to earn less than minimum wage.

What's his Strava then?

Seriously though, I clicked through to the Guardian source i/v and I've never seen such a random collection of thoughts in my life!

He clearly missed his calling in life! Drugs and cycling - could have been a pro.
