Two arrested after 82-year-old cyclist killed in Gloucestershire

Fatal collision took place in Stroud shortly before 5am on Monday morning; police are appealing for witnesses

Police in Gloucestershire have said that they  made two arrests following the death of an 82-year-old woman who was cycling in Stroud shortly before 5am yesterday morning.

Officers were alerted to an incident involving a cyclist on Cairncross Road at 4.50am on Monday morning.

The cyclist, who was seriously injured,  was taken to Southmead Hospital in Bristol, where she subsequently died.

Gloucestershire Constabulary said that initially it was not clear whether any other vehicle was involved.

However, officers subsequently arrested a 39-year-old-man and a 28-year-old woman on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The pair have since been released while investigations continue.

Police have appealed for anyone who saw the collision or has information to contact them.

They said that they would "particularly like to speak to a man who was walking near Beards Lane, heading towards Cainscross Road, at about 4.50am as he may have seen a vehicle drive past at speed."

Anyone who has information is asked to contact Gloucestershire Constabulary on 101 quoting incident 22 of 23 April.
