Police are appealing for witnesses after a cyclist was killed in a collision with a bus travelling on Cambridge’s guided busway on Thursday. 50-year-old Steve Moir was hit in Long Road, adjacent to the Clare College playing fields, at about 4.50pm and died at the scene.
Moir was a Senior Project Manager at Cambridge Assessment. Saul Nassé, Group Chief Executive, said that he had been travelling home from work:
"I am very sorry to confirm that our colleague Steve Moir has died after an accident on the guided busway yesterday. He was involved in a collision as he made his way home from work on his bike.
“Steve joined Cambridge Assessment in 1996 and he was a Senior Project Manager in our premises team. He was a much-loved colleague and our thoughts are with his family.”
The guided busway is owned by Cambridgeshire County Council. A spokesman said: "We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Steve Moir’s family and friends.
"There will be a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident and Cambridgeshire County Council will be fully cooperating with this. It would be inappropriate for us to comment any further until this investigation is complete."
Anyone who witnessed the collision can contact the Road Policing Unit on 101 quoting CC-13092018-0340.
The Cambridgeshire Guided Busway connects Cambridge, Huntingdon and St Ives. There is an asphalt cycle track/bridleway alongside some sections of the route.
Once the specially adapted buses are on the busway, the driver does not need to steer. Guidewheels perform the steering function by engaging with the concrete kerb.
The standard speed on the busway is 90kph (56mph), reducing to 50kph (30mph) where it crosses the public highway.
In 2011, a cyclist narrowly avoiding being run over on the guided busway after jumping clear at the last moment. He had taken to the busway because the adjacent bridleway was closed for repairs and didn’t hear the bus as he was wearing headphones. His bike was crushed.
Except for the wear which might suggest they've been that way for a while. I'd point out that rim blocks have a habit of switching 90 degrees...
You forgot ignoring half the race to show awkward interviews with the riders' Proud Parents™ instead.
Obviously it means 'springing out of the bunch' on a critical sector. Or maybe it's referring to the time of year.
