Another tube strike, another boost for Boris bikes

Number of bikes hired increases by almost a quarter

As the second recent 24hr tube strike draws to a close, Transport for London has  reported a 23% increase in the use of Barclays Cycle Hire scheme bikes compared to a typical day.

The total number of bikes hired up to 3pm was 11,822, a healthy increase on the 9617 figure for an average day.

The RMT - the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers - and TSSA - Transport Salaried Staffs' Association - are striking until 18.28hrs today over what they say are plans to axe 800 jobs and other cuts which will compromise safety on London Underground.

A spokesman for Transport for London said: “More and more Tube services are now running as the 'paralysis' predicted by the leaderships of the RMT and TSSA unions has once again failed to materialise.

“Trains are now running on 10 of the 11 lines, with the Central line operating between White City and Leytonstone, and the Waterloo & City line now running.”

How was your commute in London today? Did you hire a Boris bike, did you notice a significant increase in cyclists on your usual commute? Log in and let us know.

Maybe a few people are sticking with it - CS3 was busy again today. Perhaps communist Crow and the his heavies are unwittingly supporting the efforts of Boris.

CS7 was very busy. Traffic was static and there were lots more cyclists (which was good to see). Loads of Boris bikes out, I don't think I have seem so many in one journey.
Strangely the traffic got better as I got towards the city.

The traffic near me was terrible, with Tower Bridge road barely moving. Quite a few more cyclists on the road and the bike shed at work was more full than usual. It was a day for my backstreets route.

A lot of 'Sunday' cyclists on the road. Luckily the traffic was so slow that their sudden swerves didn't cause any harm 4

'Superhighway' 3 was much busier than usual. Good to see so many new cyclists - maybe a few will do it again. Passing the A13 made getting on the bike on a Monday morning feel good - the traffic looked horrendous.
