Woman chases down man who stole bike from 12-year-old boy and helps bring him to justice

Darren Boyd sentenced to a year in jail following robbery in Scunthorpe in September

A woman in Scunthorpe who saw a man push the 12-year-old friend of her son off his bike and ride off on it chased after him in her car and helped bring the thief to justice.

Darren Boyd, aged 31, was jailed for 12 months at Grimsby Crown Court after pleading guilty to robbery in connection with the incident on 22 September, reports Grimsby Live.

The court heard how the boy had ridden his bike, worth £1,000, to his friend’s house and was waiting outside when Boyd emerged from an alleyway and pushed him from the bike from behind.

Grabbing the bike, he rode off, with the boy getting into his friend’s mother’s car as she drove after him.

Boyd managed to get out of their sight a couple of times, but on both occasions they managed to spot him again.

The second time, he came towards the car on the bike and the woman got out and shoved him off it, with the boy grabbing his bicycle.

Boyd was said to be in pain as he writhed around on the ground, with passers-by helping detain him until the arrival of the police.

In a statement, the boy who owned the bike said: "I'm completely shaken up. It reduced me to tears.

"The bike was a Christmas present. I am concerned it will happen again.”

He added: “I am always looking over my shoulder."

The court was told that Boyd had 14 previous convictions for a variety of offences including theft and assault.

In mitigation, Nigel Sloane said that Boyd had managed to control his previous drug abuse for around a decade but suffered a relapse when his mother died unexpectedly.

Well done friends Mum.  Respect to you.

Regarding the £1000 bike for a 12 year old, that is irrelevent, if a parent has the money and chooses to spend it on their child that is up to them.  Simple maths tells me you don't have to be a millionaire to spend £1000.

Burt, this was robbery, not just theft.  He used violence towards a child, to steal, always dealt with much more seriously, and he had form.

Which bit of "While I'm not entirely upset that this sad thief has been apprehended,......" did you not understand?  The litotes perhaps?  Not entirely my unfavourite figure of speech.

Good on her. Although I might have overbalanced shoving and trod on him by mistake ...

Mitigation. Bollocks. No excuse. Maybe double the sentence for trying to avoid it.

While I'm not entirely upset that this sad thief has been apprehended, a £1,000 mountain bike for a 12 year old?  He was sentenced to a year in prison, much more than the average killer driver gets.  It's true that in our society, possessions are worth more than lives when it comes to our judicial system.

That’s the price of a decent hardtail, or a very cheap but serviceable full suss. Why do you suggest a young rider is only entitled to a BSO that’s half their body weight?

I know how much bikes cost, but £1,000 christmas present for a 12 year old?  Just how many millionaires are there in Scunthorpe?

utterly irrelevant, it's none of your business how much the bike cost. A child was assaulted and had their bike forcefully snatched from them, did you actually read the trauma the kid is going through?

You need to think long and hard as to why your point on this is well off the mark.

You seem to be getting rather upset about something I haven't said.
